Why You Don't Need to Freak Out That a City Worker Peed in S.F.'s Reservoirs

This is a freaky city, but one with limits. Pee-play has to be consensual in order to be acceptable. It certainly cannot be one-sided secretive act carried out by ...  a city employee.

Revelations that San Francisco has apparently been drinking Martin Sanchez's urine for some time now have earned the city headlines in CNN and other national outlets. Sanchez, a $111,000-a-year worker with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, was recently busted peeing into an  empty reservoir.

This wasn't his first time making water in our water: he'd made it a ritual of his to relieve himself in a city reservoir on special occasions, the Chronicle's Matier and Ross reported.

This begs the question: are we drinking other peoples' pee, too? And does it matter?

Hey, Kids: Bay Area Schools Will Close Due to Epic Storm (Update)

Posted By on Wed, Dec 10, 2014 at 1:12 PM

Update, 2:22 p.m.: San Francisco Unified School District announced this afternoon that indeed, schools will close tomorrow due to rain.

Original story:

After months of protracted summer, followed by months of listless, balmy fall, it's little surprise that Bay Area residents are ill-equipped to handle tomorrow's impending storm of the decade

To prepare, we're shutting things down. Heavyweight hipster eyeware retailer has postponed its opening party in San Francisco.  "Drag Queens on Ice" has scheduled its holiday show in Union Square.

And now, San Francisco and Oakland schools are talking canceling classes.

Man Who Tripped on Pants and Fell Onto BART Tracks Escapes Death But Causes Train Delays

Posted By on Thu, Oct 23, 2014 at 12:57 PM

After yesterday's confusion over reports that someone had fallen under a BART train, followed by more news that nobody was found under the train, we thought we'd set the record straight.

Someone did fall onto the tracks yesterday afternoon at the Embarcadero Station, but was able to climb back onto the platform, just in time.

Here's what happened:

Copies of Last San Francisco Bay Guardian Now Selling for $29.99 on eBay

Posted By on Fri, Oct 17, 2014 at 7:29 AM

"So that sucks that this week's Guardian is the last one," Facebook user Jason Storm wrote in a despairing status update. "And," he added, "now I can't find a copy anywhere cuz some assholes are taking them all to sell on eBay."

In fact, the most enterprising such asshole is hawking yesterday's edition of the free newspaper for $29.99. Now a collector's item, it's described as " a clean, fresh, near-mint copy of that final issue, dated October 15 2014, taken from a street distribution box, never opened, never read. A piece of San Francisco media history!"

"PayPal only, please," the seller adds.

So far, no one has placed any bids.

No citations were dealt, and no blame was heaped on the 25-year-old driver of a wayward van in Joe Biden's motorcade, which hit a San Francisco police motorcycle (also part of Biden's retinue) last Wednesday while exiting the garage of the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel.

According to the Wall Street Journal and other media outlets, this has happened before.

In February of 2010 Fox News gleefully reported that Biden's motorcade had been involved in three accidents in three months. One was fatal; another injured figure skater Peggy Fleming and bobsled champ Vonetta Flowers, who were riding in the van when it was rear-ended in Vancouver.

Intense Solar Storm Headed Toward Earth

Posted By on Thu, Sep 11, 2014 at 3:25 PM

A temperate Indian summer may have settled into the Bay Area, but evidently huge storms are brewing in outer space.

And now, they're headed toward Earth.

No, this isn't the beginning of a low-budget sci-fi film. In the last two days, the sun has emitted two bursts of radiation called coronal mass ejections (CME)s, both associated with solar flares — the most intense types of explosions in the solar system. According to NASA, the second flare is an X1.6 class.

5 Reasons San Francisco Should Maybe Change Its Name to Honor All Sugar Daddies

Home sweet home - SUGARDADDIE.COM

Sugardaddie.com, a dating website that pairs flush businessmen with broke babes, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in a truly bizarre fashion -- by trying to get a town to rename itself after the site.

At first, the company was only approaching towns that already had the word "sugar" in their name, such as Sugar Land, Texas. But after getting shot down in the Lone Star State, Sugardaddie.com expanded its wacky business concept to California.

Now, the company is trying to cajole the wealthy town of Woodside down on the Peninsula, to finally do something that will put itself on the map. In exchange for the naming rights of Woodside, Sugardaddie.com is offering the already cash-rich town $11.65 million.

Meet Your Neighborhood Drones

Last week, a video surfaced on YouTube of what appeared to be a drone hovering over a residential neighborhood in West Oakland. Filmed by videographer Jacob Crawford, the eerie unmanned aircraft was held aloft by several mini helicopter-like blades with blinking red-and-green lights.

Drones have been a pressing issue for our friends across the bay; in December, the Alameda County Sheriff's Department incited anger and paranoia when it revealed plans to buy its own drone, for whatever reason. However, the $31,646 item was put on hold after the American Civil Liberties Union accused the department of trying to slip it past East Bay folks without enough public vetting. Sheriff Greg Ahern assured the Chronicle that he would only use the drone for "mission-specific incidents" such as search-and-rescue missions.

Ahern, who says he doesn't have his own drone, has insisted the aircraft would not be for spying on civilians. So then why did Crawford's video include a clip of Ahern talking about how the unmanned aircraft had great surveillance potential?

Specifically, he says, "We wouldn't use it for Occupy Oakland movement; however, I'm not going to tell you we wouldn't use it in the event that a crowd turned violent and and started vandalizing or harming people."

Muni Tries to Teach Riders the Real Meaning of the Word "Jihad"

Puts a whole new meaning to "building those guns"
  • Puts a whole new meaning to "building those guns"

As much grief as Muni got over its "Defeat Jihad" ads it ran last summer, it's somewhat surprising to learn that the transit agency would want to risk starting a holy war in San Francisco.

According to ABC, for the next few weeks, buses in San Francisco will be carrying more than just passengers -- they're toting messages of jihad -- again. However, it's not ads that started the mess that entangled Muni before; rather, these ads are meant to help Bay Area residents accurately define the politically charged word.

Mitt Romney: How Much Money Did He Earn While You Ate Breakfast?

Posted By on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 1:15 PM

A rich statement
  • A rich statement

There's a reason voters believe Obama would make a better sugar daddy -- Mitt Romney is not as charitable with his cash. Not even if it means getting a lap dance from porn stars like Jenna Jameson.

But just how many Benjamins is Romney rolling in these days? And how much did Romney earn in the time it took you to brush your teeth this morning?

If you've seen enough of Paul Ryan's chest or perhaps you are looking for new ways to waste more time, then you should check out RomneyMakes.com. There, you can calculate how much the disgustingly rich Republican earns in the time it takes you to do everyday activities, like take a piss on BART escalators, surf the Internet, or refill your prescription for anti-depressants.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
