Starting today, private drivers can no longer turn onto Market Street between Third and Eight streets. The new restrictions are part of the SFMTA's attempts to improve safety for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers, and make total sense for the congested, bus- and bike-heavy thoroughfare.

According to a report by Bay City News, however, SFPD and the MTA are concerned that drivers won't follow the new regulations because — despite heavy news coverage and street signage — not all GPS navigation systems are updated with the new rules. If Google Maps tells you to turn on Market, you're probably going to turn on Market, because how could Google be wrong, right?

S.F. to Spend Money on Pedestrian Safety

Posted By on Mon, Nov 17, 2014 at 4:16 PM

We've allotted a good deal of space on this blog reporting pedestrian deaths and injuries, and for good reason: people are still dying on the streets of San Francisco, despite the city's vow to end all pedestrian deaths by 2024.

That's a lofty 10-year goal, especially when money is hard to come by. Luckily, city leaders have scored a small sum of cash which they plan to spend solely on improving pedestrian safety around town.

On Thursday, Police Chief Greg Suhr will make an appearance at Sixth and Market streets to announce a $210,000 grant that was awarded to San Francisco, thanks to the State Office of Traffic Safety.

The recent bout of pedestrian deaths and injuries has reignited calls for the city to actually do something about making the streets safer.

On Friday, WalkSF and families of loved ones killed in traffic collisions, gathered at the City Hall, where they lined the steps of the building with 28 pairs of empty shoes, representing the 28 lives that have been lost to traffic crashes.
