Newsom Mania Comes to an End

Posted By on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 7:40 AM

Now that Gavin Newsom has finally cut the cord and left San Francisco, one can only wonder how long it will be before we see his face on TV again.

It's been well-stated that for such an ambitious politician, Newsom landed a politically impotent position as California's lieutenant governor. And as a reporter who trailed the mayor for a year, it's hard to imagine how San Francisco's celebrity politician is coping without the one thing that truly makes him thrive: the media.

Gavin Newsom Goes Back On His Word To Avoid Back Room Deals

Posted By on Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 12:45 PM

After winning the seat for lieutenant governor in November, Mayor Gavin Newsom told reporters, point blank, that there would be no back room deals or political bargaining when selecting an interim mayor to fill the remainder of his term.

He's also vowed to steer a clean-cut transition as he assumed his role as state lieutenant governor.

But then it seems Newsom was involved in back room shenanigans late last night when city supervisors took a short break from debating who should be the interim mayor.

And his effort for a smooth city transition? Well, that's been about as clean as Mission Street sidewalk.

It seems Mayor Gavin Newsom will soon have something else to distract him from elected office: Another kid on the way!

It's impossible to guess the naming propensities of a couple who saw fit to christen their first child "Montana." But we offered the 25 worst/least likely names for kid No. 1, so we're duty bound to do the same for kid No. 2.

Gavin Newsom Pushing ... Pension Reform?

Posted By on Thu, Dec 9, 2010 at 8:55 AM

Gavin's doing his pension dance again...
  • Gavin's doing his pension dance again...

Moments ago in a live interview on Channel 2, Mayor Gavin Newsom said he's hoping for a "third" pension reform deal to be struck before he leaves office. He reminded TV viewers he was working on pension reform before it was politically expedient to do so.

Yes, Newsom has signed the dotted line on two prior worker benefits reform measures. But for him to claim he's been an advocate of pension reform rings as hollow as Hummer-driving Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger being lauded as an environmentalist.

Gavin Newsom's SUV Parked By Fire Hydrant Outside Tennis Club

Posted By on Mon, Nov 29, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Back when Gavin Newsom's failed gubernatorial campaign was in its infancy, they mayor was caught on tape in a Los Angeles strategy session. He was also caught parking his behemoth SUV in the red zone.

Newsom's political weathervane has blown about -- currently, he's doing great -- but his penchant for depositing a massive car in illegal parking spaces has been constant. Yes, that is the mayor's SUV parked across not one but two handicapped ramps in his old Russian Hill digs. Did he park the car legally when it was driven to Montana for his nuptials? Kinda beside the point, no?

And, yes, the snapshot accompanying this story is Newsom's Hybrid Chevy Tahoe parked in front a fire hydrant in a red zone while the mayor smacked the ball around within the San Francisco Tennis Club.

Gavin Newsom Is No Longer 'Mayor Twitter'

Posted By on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 4:20 PM

There was a time when Mayor Gavin Newsom used Twitter so often he required an @intervention.

He tweeted out his daughter's birth ("Not sure [Jen] is happy I am on twitter"), sent out a tweet urging support for Barack Obama in the midst of a tense city Budget Committee meeting, and, one time, fired off 68 consecutive messages reading "thanks" or "thank you" in one day alone.

Newsom's addiction to Twitter, it seems, has gone the way of his gubernatorial aspirations. You know it's still there -- but it's not in the forefront anymore.

Update: Gavin Newsom, Philly Mayor Make Cap-Based Bet

The cleverer version of the old saying goes just so: It's not whether you win or lose, but whether you win.

Gavin Newsom won -- and thank goodness for it, because his little wager was indexed to the San Francisco Giants winning, too. Per his bet with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Newsom sent a Giants flag to Georgia to be flown above Atlanta's City Hall. Had San Francisco choked, we'd be tomahawk-chopping at a Braves banner above 1 Carlton B. Goodlett Place.

Cute -- but heavy handed. Flying a flag over City Hall encroaches into the public sphere; not only is Reed humiliated here, so are the people of Atlanta. So when Newsom and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter come up with a wager over the pending National League Championship Series, let's hope it involves these two men. And not their cities.

Caption Gavin Newsom's Fleet Week Pose!

Mayor Gavin Newsom today announced the city's "biggest fleet week celebration in 20 years" via a drier-than-dry-oatmeal press release that concluded with him quoted as lauding "skilled naval aviators of The Blue Angels, with their extraordinary airborne maneuvers."

Can you imagine Newsom saying that out loud? Is the mayor's speechwriter channeling Movietone Newsreels? On the plus side, however, the pablum statement came with the affixed intriguing photograph. Readers, let's caption this thing proper:

Gavin Newsom Stars in Video Touting His Winery a Day After Vetoing Booze Fee

And if more of you buy my environmentally friendly, low-tax wines, I'll be richer still...
One day after San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom vetoed a fee on alcohol sales aimed at paying for  treatment of chronic drunks, he starred in a video on Forbes Magazine's website touting a Napa Valley winery he co-owns.

The video describes how Cade Winery, which Newsom launched in 2006 with oil billionaire Gordon Getty and vintner John Conover, was built with extra insulation and additional windows so as to save energy. These are the kinds of things you need to do to earn the second-highest rating under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED resource-conservation standard.

Mayor Newsom Paints a Bike Lane

Posted By on Mon, Aug 9, 2010 at 2:25 PM

We don't exactly frequent the mayor's self-congratulatory press conferences. But when we heard he'd actually be painting part of a bike lane around the corner from our offices today at 1 p.m., we put down the amyl nitrate and headed out.

The requisite media circus had congregated on the corner of Fourth and Townsend Streets as the mayor, slickly dressed in a gray pinstripe suit, gushed about how great it is that San Francisco has finally lifted its four-year injunction on doubling bike lane miles in the city. "The growth is going to be exponential," he said. His gruff voice traveled nicely on the breeze, which smelled faintly of wax.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
