We Already Basically Have Driverless Cars

Starting today, private drivers can no longer turn onto Market Street between Third and Eight streets. The new restrictions are part of the SFMTA's attempts to improve safety for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers, and make total sense for the congested, bus- and bike-heavy thoroughfare. 

According to a report by Bay City News, however, SFPD and the MTA are concerned that drivers won't follow the new regulations because — despite heavy news coverage and street signage — not all GPS navigation systems are updated with the new rules. If Google Maps tells you to turn on Market, you're probably going to turn on Market, because how could Google be wrong, right?

Video: Watch This Muni Driver Run a Red Light, Almost Cause Accident

Muni drivers run red lights all the time — and now we have a dashcam video to prove it. 

YouTube user boris4ka posted this video he/she shot with a handy dashboard camera which shows a Muni bus blowing a red light at 19th Ave / Park Presidio and Cross Over Drive on Jan. 20. According to boris4ka, "Muni bus runs a solid red light that was red for a few seconds already, causing another car to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident."

Transit Officials Blame Golden Gate Bridge Accident on Bad Driving, Not New Barrier

By now you've heard that the Golden Gate Bridge reopened several hours ahead of schedule(!). And by now you've heard that there has already been an accident which slowed Monday's commute. 

Surprising? No. Frustrating? Yes. As noted by the media blitz over the weekend, a new movable median barrier was installed along the span of the iconic bridge with the intention of making the drive along the Golden Gate safer

Regardless of how it might appear, the new barrier is not to blame, says Priya Clemens, spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Transit District

Driver Beats Pedestrians During Road Rage Incident

An unidentified driver was arrested yesterday when he admitted to police that he "knocked out" some pedestrians after almost hitting them with his car. 

According to police reports, two men were walking at a crosswalk along the 4900 block of Third Street when a driver came to a short stop nearly hitting one of the pedestrians with his bumper.

Trolley Tour Bus Fatally Hits City Government Employee

A trolley tour bus hit a city government employee just outside of City Hall today, officials said.

A Twitter photo of the aftermath of the collision apparently shows emergency personnel attending to the victim, who the Chron identified as a member of the City Controller's Office. These are the folks that make sure the city's fiscal house is in order, performing audits of city agencies and the like. 

We called up the City Controller, and a staffer did verify the accident, saying they would not confirm who was hurt until the family was notified.

Another Pedestrian Critically Injured in Hit-And-Run Collision

San Francisco police are looking for yet another driver who hit a cyclist in the Mission District yesterday morning and fled the scene.

It's the fifth pedestrian hurt or killed since Sunday night.

According to police reports, at about 4:55 a.m., the unidentified cyclist was on the 2100 block of Mission Street removing his bike from a rack when a driver in a dark-colored SUV struck him. The driver sped off, leaving the pedestrian in critical condition.

Three Injured, One Dead in Separate Pedestrian Collisions

An unidentified man was killed this morning after being hit by a car in the city's Outer Sunset neighborhood. 

According to Officer Albie Esparza, the man was at 43rd Avenue and Sloat Boulevard at about 7 a.m. today when he was struck by a vehicle. Responding officers attempted to give the man CPR, but he did not survive.
