The Marine Mammal Center in Sausolito has had quite a year. After spending the first 10 months of the year rescuing record-breaking numbers of seals and sea lions — more than ever before in its 40-year history — the center is now facing an influx of malnourished northern fur seal pups.

The San Francisco Zoo's 13-year-old African lioness Sukari gave birth to a baby lion cub on Sunday.

The lion's father is twelve-year-old Jahari. Zoo staff are allowing Sukari and the cub to bond in private for the next three weeks, so the only photo available is a still from the zoo's "lion cam." Zoo staff will not know the cub's sex for several weeks.

The zoo's press release notes, "Zoo officials observed accelerated breeding behavior between Jahari and Sukari throughout the first part of 2015, culminating in Sukari's pregnancy in May." In case you were wondering how lion babies get made.

  • This is Clifford. He needs a forever home. You can adopt him in Oakland.

The Oakland animal shelter is waiving adoption fees for the month of July and launching a foster program for large dogs, the East Bay Express reports.  Oakland Animal Services is at 200% of capacity, in part because the rise in evictions and displacement is forcing families to part from the furry friends.

These furballs of love need you. And, to be honest, you need them.

The Golden State Warriors won a basketball game last night, but Riley Curry, Steph's two-year-old daughter, won the internet. During the post-game celebration and press conference, Riley played ghost, spit out her gum, performed a cover version of Big Sean's "Blessings," and told her dad to be quiet.

Enjoy.

Nothing good or decent or remotely happy-making has happened in San Francisco since November 15, 2013, when the entire city collaborated to help Miles Scott live out his fantasy of being Batkid.

Scott, for those of you heartless monsters who don't remember, is the then-5-year-old leukemia survivor whose love of superheros inspired the Make-A-Wish Foundation to transform San Francisco into Gotham City for a day. Everyone from the mayor to the police chief to President Obama to local media got involved in making Miles's dream come true.

Warner Brothers is releasing a documentary about Batkid's special day on June 26, and yesterday the company released a trailer.

Watch it, and remember what it's like to feel.

Here's some warm and fuzzy news to start your weekend. More than four dozen adorable dogs were recently rescued from a South Korean meat farm, and are enjoying a new life in San Francisco as we type.

The Humane Society International worked to remove 57 dogs from a miserable meat farm and forced the owner to permanently close down the property. " As part of the plan, he signed an agreement with HSI to shut down the property and move into a permanent, humane trade in crop farming," according to the San Francisco SPCA.

Virgin America is playing hero to 12 Bay Area chihuahuas — again: The airline is partnering with SF Animal Care and Control to evacuate the pups to New York today in an airlift dubbed 'Operation Chihuahua'.

Why do these chihuahuas get to fly to the Big Apple and you don't, you ask? Because Bay Area animal shelters are still suffering from an overload of the purse pups. And purse pups go well in New York City.

Here is your Friday morning pick-me-up: Piglet, the pit bull pup that was found roaming Interstate 880 in Oakland the other evening is back at home, enjoying time with her family.

The dog was picked up by a CHP officer who saw the lonely pup strolling the freeway near 66th Avenue in Oakland. She had a collar but no tags, and clearly looked like she was ready to go home.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
