Ferguson Verdict: Oakland Protesters Scuffle With Police

Posted By on Mon, Nov 24, 2014 at 8:35 PM

Update 9:31 p.m.:
Protesters are clearing the freeway and the crowds are dwindling a bit, however some demonstrators are still tagging buildings  and smashing windows, including one to a news van, according to Twitter user @katienelson210.

Update 9 p.m.: Cops called the scene in downtown Oakland an unlawful assembly as protesters tossed flares and bottles at them. Arrests have begun. Things are getting tense.

Original Story 8 p.m.: As expected, protestors took to the streets of Oakland and other Bay Area cities, closing freeways and blocking roadways after hearing the stunning news that a Ferguson cop who shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, would not be indicted.

Businesses had long prepared for the crowds, who as of 8 p.m. started a small scuffle with police at the Interstate 880 ramp after they hopped on patrol cars and started tagging them.

The crowd of mostly peaceful protesters swelled at 14th and Broadway and marched their way to the 580 onramp, causing cops to close down the freeway.    Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson, who is white. The shooting sparked rage in communities across the nation, including Oakland which faced a similarly emotional situation after Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man, was shot by BART cop Johannes Mehserle on New Year's Day 2009.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
