Time to party like it's 1998.

Last year, marijuana-related arrests declined for the fourth consecutive year to levels not seen since the Clinton Administration, according to the FBI.

There were 693,000 people arrested for crimes involving cannabis across the country last year, the first time nationwide marijuana arrests fell below the 700,000 mark in 16 years, as HIGH TIMES' Russ Belville pointed out today.

That's a promising trend. What's less promising are stats that show drug possession still accounts for the most arrests, and that throughout the country, arrests for marijuana possession make up the bulk of drug busts.

But even that is changing, a shift led by states out here in the Wild West.

Green Cab Closure Signals More Blood-Letting Ahead

Green Cab, the city's carbon-neutral, worker-owned taxi cooperative, shut its doors Thursday at midnight, the moment its insurance policy runs out. With accidents on the books and ever-diminishing financial reserves, the company has struggled to find a new insurer that SFMTA approves.

"As a small company, we're not attractive to insurers," Green Cab co-founder Mark Gruber says, explaining that larger entities can absorb the cost of accidents, and allow insurance writers to make up the money in premiums. Green only has 16 cars in its fleet , making it modest, by San Francisco standards.

The family of Dan Ha, the iOS developer who went missing on Halloween night, held a press conference this afternoon confirming their worst nightmare: the young tech worker is believed to be dead.

Yesterday morning, the Coast Guard recovered a body from the water near Pier 22, and although the Medical Examiner's Office has not confirmed it to be Ha, his family says authorities confirmed his clothes, wallet contents, and phone matched those of Ha's personal belongings.

And here you thought your wrinkles were bad. Even with its makeover on the eastern span, the Bay Bridge can't cover up its real age of 78: just have a gander at the bridge's aging (expansion) joints.

But it's not nice to point out someone's flaws, especially  not on their birthday. So instead, we'll show you this nostalgic video of the Bay Bridge from its youthful days.

Supervisor Avalos Teams Up with ACLU to Curb Police Surveillance

Supervisor John Avalos may be knee-deep in a fight for better cop surveillance in San Francisco — namely, body-worn cameras, so that cops can spy on themselves — but now he's also trying to curb the city's zeal for new eavesdropping technologies.

Throughout the country, law enforcement departments are using license plate readers, shot-spotters, drones, and data collection programs, both to detect neighborhood crime patterns and maintain a more granular level of scrutiny over the places they patrol.

San Francisco, which has always conceived itself as a cradle of innovation, has been quick to embrace the latest-and-greatest devices. But Avalos and members of the American Civil Liberties Union caution that early, hasty, adoption doesn't serve the public interest.

Proud to Serve: A Powerful Photographic Exhibit at the LGBT Center

Posted By on Wed, Nov 12, 2014 at 8:47 AM

unnamed-2.jpg

Three years after the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the subject of LGBT Americans serving in the military is still pretty raw. There are undeniably traditionalists who would prefer to turn back the clock on that chapter of social justice, and since trans people are still explicitly barred from serving, it’s not as though the issue was ever fully put to rest.

Beyond the unresolved issues between gay America and the homophobia in the military establishment, there was always something of a schism within the LGBT community itself. It’s undeniable that a large segment of the LGBT population gave only two cheers for the right of gay military personnel to serve openly, because the more progressive move would be to disarm the armed services, scale back American imperialism, and improve the world through more peaceful means.

But rather than re-litigate all these arguments, a photographic exhibit currently up at the San Francisco LGBT Center examines other troubling dimensions to the realities faced by LGBT service members and veterans.

Net Neutrality: How San Francisco Could Create Its Own "Open Internet" Island

Posted By on Wed, Nov 12, 2014 at 7:09 AM

Obama advocating for a free and open Internet.
  • Obama advocating for a free and open Internet.
President Obama created a seismic wave in the blogosphere after taking a bullish stance on net neutrality Monday, urging the FCC to adopt a strict set of rules for cable service providers. Companies shouldn't be allowed to wantonly block off websites, Obama argued, and they shouldn't be allowed to charge fees for priority access (what's known in the business as "an Internet fast lane").

It seemed like a huge blow to the four major carriers that currently control our Internet portals (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and Charter Communications), and a victory for consumers. Finally, the FCC had political cover to serve the public interest.

But there's still no telling which way the commission might rule. Shortly after Obama issued his two-minute statement championing an open and free Internet, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler replied with a noncommittal statement of his own, in which he stressed that his agency doesn't operate at the president's behest. (That said, he promised to take Obama's opinion into consideration, along with thousands of other public comments.)

So, there's a glimmering possibility that the agency might not rule in favor of an open Internet. And even if it does side with Obama, consumers are still left with the fundamental problem of a small group of companies controlling a critical resource.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
