Earlier today, San Francisco's Health Director announced that some 500 Central American refugee kids would make San Francisco their home by next year.

And we plan on welcoming each one of them under the city's Sanctuary City program, which creates a safe haven for illegal immigrants. They'll get access to health care, schools, and other city services.

Garcia points our that many of these kids will need mental health care after enduring extreme poverty and strife in their home countries while being torn apart from their families.

San Francisco: A City of Smug Assholes

We don't tend to take unscientific studies seriously, but there's some new information circulating the Internet today that got us thinking deeply: Is San Francisco a city made up of complete assholes?

According to Movoto.com, a San Francisco-based real estate blog, all signs point to "yes, definitely." The researchers over there crunched some data to determine which cities were the snobbiest in America. They looked at cost of living, lack of fast food, education level, the number of art galleries and private schools, as well as income level to determine just how high and mighty they are.

Turns out, San Francisco's penchant for Google Glass, overpriced bread, and white people with Internet access (okay, those are our words, not theirs) has earned us the snobbiest city title.

Fire Burning in the Mission District (Update)

Posted By on Thu, Sep 4, 2014 at 1:33 PM

Update 3:10 p.m.: Looks like things are getting worse with the Mission Fire. Twitter is buzzing with updates from neighbors and news outlets. We talked to the fire department, which tells us that so far, five people have been transported to the hospital, three civilians and two firefighters. At 3:02 p.m., the front of the building was starting to separate, and fire crews were being pulled from the scene for safety reasons. A fire marshal tells SF Weekly that there's still a lot of smoke at this time, so they can't see how much of the building has come down, but it's starting to collapse.

Update 2:35 p.m.:
ABC News is now reporting that the blaze in the Mission District has grown to a five-alarm fire.

Update 1:41 p.m.: We spoke with Mindy Talmadge, spokeswoman with the Fire Department., who says they two-alarm fire is still not contained and heavy smoke is billowing from the rooftop. Firefighters were having some trouble accessing the top floors because of bars on the windows. Thus, the conditions inside started worsening. Fire crews pulled all personnel out of the building and they are now "fighting it defensively on the outside."

According to police reports, the woman was on the 100 block of Bryant Street just before 11 p.m. when she got irritated by a rowdy man who was disturbing her peace.

When she confronted the man, he responded by clocking her in the face multiple times.

Latino Mural Instructors Surprised to Discover They're Latino Mural Instructors

Students' forthcoming murals probably won't match this earlier Precita Eyes work... - SUSAN CERVANTES AND MARINA PEREZ WONG
Did you know September is National Hispanic Heritage Month? Probably not. And, adopting the system that makes fiscal years so easy to comprehend for the general public, Hispanic Heritage Month actually runs from mid-September to mid-October.

So, the San Francisco Public Library's celebration of Hispanic Heritage month on Tuesday actually doesn't fall within Hispanic Heritage month. And, somewhat oddly, the youth Latino mural workshop will be held in North Beach — a move akin to siting an Italian heritage festival in the Mission.

The art organization leading the event, meanwhile, was taken aback when informed that this was, somehow, tied to Hispanic Heritage Month. Or Hispanic anything.

Just when you thought you were burned out on Burning Man, this Craigslister comes along and suggests all you future Da Vincis, Einsteins, and Socrates get together and create a Permanent (with a capital "P") society that allows denizens to self-express all day, every day.

We're not exactly sure what this new civilization would look like, but according to the Craigslister, it'd be the offspring of Woodstock and Burning Man. Ah, yes, a lifetime supply of Tempeh and unemployment checks.

Bait bikes are all the rage right now, much to the chagrin of bike thieves. Among the many benefits of this new technology (you might your bike back and thieves will definitely get jail time), are videos like the one below which shows the thievery in action.

Just to show everyone how fast these crooks work in San Francisco, NBC national investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen and his team locked a bike to a tree in San Francisco and not only captured its theft on camera, but tracked it down to a random house and retrieved his ride.

  • That's the feeling.
Results from surveys are regularly flaunted as hard facts despite clear limitations, including margin of error, telephone "push-polling," and sample sizes.

That said, all the major polling firms in the United States can agree on one thing: a majority of Americans favor marijuana legalization. And the biggest-ever poll on marijuana legalization yet shows that a clear majority of almost a half-million Americans favor an end to cannabis prohibition.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
