Actor James Garner, who died over the weekend, is a model of versatility.

Best-known for his turn on "The Rockford Files," we remember him fondly as the man who made a Nazi POW camp seem fun — and the ideal place to run an illicit moonshine still, with help from Steve McQueen — and thanks to Celebstoner, we are reminded of Garner's secret to enjoyable longevity: marijuana.

Like McQueen, Garner was a regular marijuana smoker. And unlike the shorter-lived McQueen, Garner smoked cannabis for 50 years, and credited marijuana with improving his health and well-being immensely. He also called for legalization in 2011 in his autobiography. What's not to like?

A 58-year-old man was taken to the hospital after he was inadvertently tossed into a recycling truck early this morning.

At about 6:30 a.m., the man was slumbering inside a recycling dumpster when a Recology truck driver dumped the bin which was filled with cardboard — and the sleeping man — into the garbage truck.

Mindy Talmadge, spokeswoman for the San Francisco Fire Department, says the driver heard the man banging in the back of the truck; he stopped the truck, exchanged a few words with the man before he immediately drove him to the nearest fire station where he was carted away in an ambulance.

Sailor and Mermaid Go Missing in San Francisco

Only a tiny portion of Henri Marie-Rose's Sailor and Mermaid remains...

In his finest bit of playacting outside the Oval Office, Ronald Reagan in Kings Row portrayed a double amputee who awoke, post-operation, and exclaimed "Where's the rest of me?

If Henri Marie-Rose's 1970 sculpture Sailor and Mermaid were a sentient being, it would do the same.

For 30-odd years, Cindy Casey and her now-deceased husband, Michael, renovated ornate elements of city buildings and works of art here in San Francisco. Now she documents public art here -- or lack thereof

Sailor and Mermaid is, ostensibly, mounted in front of a city health center at 1351 24th Avenue. But, Casey recently discovered, only a tiny fraction of the sculpture remains standing there.

Did You Hear That Rainstorm Last Night?

Oakland, around 4:40 a.m.
  • Oakland, around 4:40 a.m.

Obviously, that question only applies to the insomniacs out there. We heard a very loud pitter-patter on our Oakland rooftop around 4 a.m., followed by some very unexpected thunder, but we weren't convinced it was weather-related until peeking out the window.

Come to find out, we weren't the only ones who witnessed this summertime rarity.

Weather experts confirmed that indeed raindrops fell through the East Bay briefly around 4 a.m. -- there was some lightening, thunder, and hail too.

If San Francisco Lands the 2024 Olympics, Will We Have to Clean Up Our Sex-Positive Image?

The morals police

San Francisco has put in its bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics. It's a long-shot no matter how much Mayor Ed Lee wants it, as we'd have to beat out Boston, D.C. and Los Angeles (a two-time previous host) just to get the U.S. committee's official nod before competing against any number of world cities.

Apart from promised revenues and infrastructure improvements that don't always materialize, plus the prospect of being saddled with stadiums that languish unused, there is another problem for residents of host cities consider: The possible return of the morals police.

Rio de Janeiro, which hosted the recently concluded World Cup and will also be the site of the 2016 Games, might have a reputation as a freewheeling pansexual utopia (albeit a crime-ridden one), but as VICE noted, there were crackdowns on bars, particularly those with large gay and transgender clienteles.

There's been recent reports about more break-ins at tech offices around San Francisco, and while we don't have statistics to give you a current snapshot, we do have some recent video footage of the alleged crimes in action.

These videos are reportedly from a surveillance camera at the BuildZoom office earlier this month. YouTube user David Petersen, who is also the founder of the company, posted the following videos and this message to viewers:

The BuildZoom office at 650 Mission Street in San Francisco was burglarized on Sunday, July 6th, at 7:02 am.

This person has burglarized at least two other offices in SOMA, and was spotted attempting to break into our building about 2 weeks ago by our cleaners. We believe that she had a copy of a key to our unit.

I will personally pay $1000 to the first person to identify this woman. If you have any idea who it is, please email david@buildzoom.com. Thank you!

She came back 20 minutes later to steal more, but our alarm went off and scared her away

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
