For years, the upstanding folks in the Tenderloin community have tried hard to wipe away so much of what makes the Tenderloin the Tenderloin -- drugs, bodily fluids on the sidewalks, and more drugs.

While the effort has not gone unnoticed, some might argue that any slight makeover has. Alas, the city's Public Works Department is joining the campaign to clean up the TL, starting with the neighborhood's most basic necessity: a public bathroom equip with needle receptacles for used needles.

These pit stops have added bells and whistles, too: sinks for washing your hands and dog stations where your pup can poop, too.

Venture Capitalist Gets Enough Support to Put Crazy Measure to Split California Into Six States on 2016 Ballot

The new world order.
  • The new world order.

Venture capitalist Timothy Draper, the man who bankrolled the erstwhile Bang with Friends Face Book App (now rechristened "Down"), and unleashed a university of rich, entitled "Superheroes" onto the world, has recast himself as a political zealot.

And now, he's pushing a bizarre plan to divide California into six separate states, each with its own government and economy. Silicon Valley, predictably, would constitute one of these autonomous empires.

Believe it or not, Draper actually has followers -- enough to put this plan on the November 2016 ballot. Yet another chance for sane voters to promptly shut down pointless movements. After dumping $2 million of his own savings into the campaign, Draper garnered the requisite 808,000 signatures required to legitimize the measure.

Supervisor Scott Wiener to Feds: Let Gay Men Donate Blood

Posted By on Tue, Jul 15, 2014 at 9:24 AM

Gay blood is fabulous

Last week, Supervisor Scott Wiener joined other across the nation in the National Gay Blood Drive, a petition demanding the feds end the decades-long ban on gays donating blood.

his efforts didn't end there. Today, Wiener, who is openly gay, is calling on the Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution that reiterates his stance on this whole issue: gay and bisexual men should be allowed to give blood already.

As it stands, the Federal Drug Administration says that any man who has had sex with another man since 1977 can't donate blood. The (ill)logic behind that rule is that back in 1983 -- at the height of the AIDS epidemic -- men who had sex with other men were at the highest risk for HIV/AIDS. Although much has changed in the last 30 years -- advances in health, screening practices, hairstyles, and reality -- the ban on gay blood has not.

If only it were that quick and easy to trot around the globe.

An air passenger recently documented his/her flight from Tokyo to San Francisco, documenting the long-ass flight that, thanks to technology, only appeared to take 83 seconds. This is an impressive showing, considering it takes about 10-plus hours to get between the two world-class cities.

According to the creators, it took 3,400 separate images to make the time-lapse video, which starts at Narita Airport in Tokyo and ends at SFO.

Sit back and enjoy the flight:

Twitter Sued for Age Discrimination

Tech companies don't look too kindly on their elders.
  • Tech companies don't look too kindly on their elders.

By now we're habituated to think of Silicon Valley as a bros' domain -- with CEOs walloped by scandals they committed at fraternity parties , and whole corps of engineers who arrive to work on Segways.

Now, that stereotype is being scrutinized in court -- again.

In a lawsuit filed last week in San Francisco, former Twitter employee Peter H. Taylor is charging the company with wrongful termination, claiming a "substantially younger" supervisor made derogatory comments about his age.

Taylor, who is 57, says he was canned without notice despite performing his duties in "an exemplary manner." Twitter duly replaced him with several employees in their 20s and 30s, according to the complaint.
