A 30-foot humpback whale washed ashore yesterday afternoon near Surfer's Beach in Half Moon Bay -- and we're distressed about it.

The waves reportedly continued to pull the whale back out to sea as crowds gathered to watch the unusual scene. No word on what happened, but biologists are reportedly headed out to sea today to see if they can recover the animal and find out what killed it.

Here's some footage of the whale (warning: it's sad):

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
