Hot welding equipment, left to smolder in yesterday's hot sun, is the most-likely culprit behind the massive five-alarm fire yesterday which consumed a Mission Bay apartment complex under construction.
Fire crews were still dumping water on the (formerly) 176-unit mixed-use building south of AT&T Park as of 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, according to Fire Department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge.
Investigators could name the cause of the fire -- which began shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday on the "eighth or ninth" floor of the wood-frame building -- as soon as this evening, Talmadge said.
No major injuries were reported, despite this fire, the first five-alarm blaze in San Francisco since 2012, being notable for generating massive amounts of heat.
A pair of Balboa High School students are in serious trouble over a selfie posted to Facebook in which the two teens pose for a picture -- in the school bathroom, of course -- with a loaded handgun.
It's not really certain how police determined that the gun was loaded when the two boys took the picture. But that gun and other weapons found at the boy's home -- all of which belonged to an older relative, police said -- have all been confiscated.
San Francisco, you can stash away that rain gear and dust off your bike, because it's going to be picnic weather this weekend. You'll have to find another chill-out spoke though since hipster hill in Dolores Park will be out of commission for a while. Clear skies and a high of 75 degrees are anticipated from Friday to Sunday (sorry, Karl!).
According to the National Weather Service, the high on Friday will be 70 degrees with a light wind of 5 to 8 mph that should subside by the morning. The evening will be clear with a high of 54 degrees: perfect weather for a night stroll.
On the heels of the stolen passports that were used to board the missing Malaysian Airlines flight 370, the American Bazaar is reporting that 70 Indian passports were stolen from BLS International.
Stolen back in November, initial estimates were that only a handful were missing, but the number has steadily climbed to 70. People would no longer be able to travel with them, as they've been cancelled, but where they are remains a mystery.
The SFPD is continuing the investigation into their disappearance.
The woman killed beneath the wheels of a BART train at Balboa Park Station Tuesday* afternoon has been identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office as 67-year-old Mary Baca, a city resident.
Baca was struck by a train at around 4:35 p.m., triggering a two-hour closure of the station during commuting hours. It is, at this time, uncertain how or why she found her way onto the tracks.
St. Patrick's Day, that annual reduction of all things Irish to green plastic bowler hats and overconsumption, falls on a Monday this year.
