Animal authorities down in the South Bay are caring for an adorable abandoned puppy that was found in East Palo Alto last week.
The small chihuahua, whose fur had been dyed hot pink, was found by a nice someone around 5 p.m. on Jan. 13. The pup was laying in the street, unable to use her back leg. She was hauled to the Peninsula Humane Society, wearing no collar or ID tags.
The staff grew to love the 2-month-old pup who they have named "Candy." However, nobody has come forward to claim the fuchsia dog nor has anyone reported missing a chihuahua with pink fur.
There was a bad accident along Market Street at Fifth Street this afternoon, involving a truck driver and a motorcycle. Police say nobody was injured, however traffic is jammed up and Muni is being rerouted.
On January 16, the Bay Area Reporter reported the story of Jewlyes Gutierrez, a 16-year-old East Bay transgender student who fought back after she was bullied at Hercules Middle/High School. Gutierrez was charged with battery by Dan Cabral, a senior deputy with the Contra Costa District Attorney -- and his decision has drawn nothing but outrage, as none of the other students involved in the altercation were charged.

Last week, the San Francisco Bulls minor-league hockey team leaked news to the press every bit as pleasant as a slapshot to the dome: Barring a quick-turnaround sale to out-of-town investors who'd move the team elsewhere, the not-quite 2-year-old franchise would implode. Coach and president Pat Curcio told the press the Bulls could fold as soon as ... now.
During the ECHL Mid-Season Meeting, the Commissioner and Board of Governors granted our request for additional time to complete negotiations that would allow for the transfer of the San Francisco Bulls to a new ownership group. We are hopeful that these negotiations will be completed within the allotted time, and we currently have no intention to cancel any games.
Update from Berkeley Police Department, 11:02 a.m. (see bottom):
Months of acrimonious Google bus blockades turned personal earlier this week, when a group of protesters surrounded the Berkeley home of Google engineer Anthony Levandowski, calling him "evil."
The protesters, who call themselves "The Counterforce," say they rang Levandowski's doorbell at 7 a.m. and then stood outside dangling a banner with the slogan "Google's Future Stops Here." They distributed fliers to Levandowski's neighbors cataloguing all the "evil" for which Levandowski is culpable. Namely, that he works for a tech company, and tech companies produce smartphones, and smartphones require precious metals that are extracted by men and women in the Congo.
Also: Levandowski is project manager for Google's self-driving car, which will "allow commuters to get another hour of sleep, talk on their phones in their car, and keep the economy going."
In other words: Have you given your boss a heads up that you'll be working from "home" tomorrow (aka the beach)?
On Friday on 8 a.m. sharp, the annual Mavericks Surf Competition will begin, where two dozen daring surfers from around the world will attempt to ride the massive swells, which are expected to reach 40 feet off the coast of Half Moon Bay tomorrow.
San Francisco homicide investigators are asking for your help in solving the homicide of Huan Chen, an 83-year-old man who was viciously beaten to death two nearly four years ago.
On Jan. 24, 2010, Chen had just exited a Muni bus and was walking home at about 6 p.m. when he was jumped by a group of boys on the sidewalk near Oakdale Avenue and Third Street. Chen was headed back to his assisted living home when the group of boys hit him on the head from behind, knocking him to the ground. Chen hit his head on the sidewalk, and the teens left him there, bleeding and disoriented, according to police.
