Posted By on Tue, Jan 21, 2014 at 4:38 PM

Update: Authorities have identified the BART cop who was shot to death as 42-year-old Sgt. Tom Smith. He leaves behind his wife and 6-year-old child.

BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey issued the following statement via ABC News:

Today's tragedy was the first death of an officer in the line of duty in the history of the BART Police Department. While performing a probation search, one BART police officer accidentally shot another officer who later died from the injury. The officers were following up on a crime committed on BART property. The Dublin Police Department (which contracts with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department) has taken over the investigation and no further details are available at this time.

Original Story 4:30 p.m.: A BART cop died this afternoon after another police officer accidentally shot him while the two did a probation search at an apartment in Dublin.

Alicia Trost, spokeswoman with BART, tells us the shooting happened at about 1 p.m. at Dougherty Road and Park Sierra in Dublin. One of the officers reportedly discharged his weapon, killing the BART officer, law enforcement authorities told the press.

The victim later died at a hospital, according to a statement from BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey and BART General Manager Grace Crunican.

"BART has been informed that one of our officers has died from wounds sustained during a shooting earlier today," according to the statement released to the media. "The entire BART organization is deeply saddened by this tragic event and we ask the public to keep the officer's family in its thoughts and prayers."

The Dublin Police Department is leading the investigation. The cop's identity is not being released at this time. More details to come.
