The FBI today announced it arrested 39-year-old Yan Feng on suspicion of setting fire to the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco on New Year's Day.

According to a criminal complaint, Feng, a Daly City resident, allegedly "detonated incendiary or explosive devices in the vicinity of the front entrance of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco on January 1, causing significant property damage."

Police caught video surveillance of the fiery incident, which showed the following:

At about 9:30 p.m., someone parked a minivan in front of the main entrance of the consulate, located at 1450 Laguna Street. The suspect got out of the car, poured two buckets of gasoline on the front door of the consulate, then lit the door on fire.

Two days later, Feng turned himself in to the cops in Daly City.

Feng has been charged with arson and damaging the property of a foreign government. Police do not believe Feng's motives were political, and terrorism has been ruled out.

The Chinese Consulate issued the following statement:

We have noted the efforts made by the US side to investigate into the arson attack and require that the perpetrator be brought to justice. We will follow up closely with the US side on the trial. We urge the US side to learn lessons from this incident, take effective measures to ensure the safety, security and dignity of Chinese diplomatic and consulate missions and staff in the U.S. and prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
