News sources are reporting that it was Thomas Howard, an Ex-Raiders linebacker, who was killed this morning in a massive car accident along Interstate 880 in Oakland this morning.

Howard, 30, was killed at about 12 a.m. on Monday when his speeding BMW rear-ended a big rig; he lost control of the car which bounced a few times before soaring over the center divider, slamming into a CRV along Interstate 880.

The driver of the CRV was also killed, according to CHP Sgt. Robert Cullinan.

Initial investigations show that the BMW was traveling more than 100 mph when the crash happened. No word on whether alcohol played a role in the accident.

Howard played for the Oakland Raiders for four years until he signed with Cincinnati in 2011. This season, he played two games for the Atlanta Falcons and was released last week.

He was chosen by Oakland in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft, making him UTEP's highest selection in 37 years. He played for the Raiders from 2006-10 and for Cincinnati from 2011-12.

He began his football career as a walk-on at the University of Texas at El Paso. The University's Director of Athletics Bob Stull released the following statement on the school's website today:

It is shocking and very sad. His story was inspiring. He came here as a walk-on defensive back and through hard work and dedication developed into one of the greatest linebackers in school history. He was enjoying a tremendous NFL career.

More than anything, though, Thomas was a fine young man, personable and engaging. He always had a smile on his face. He returned to El Paso frequently and was always eager to give back to UTEP. He was a superb alum and friend of the university. It's just hard to believe that he's gone. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

For the last two years, Howard has presented scholarship awards to UTEP walk-on student athletes through his foundation.
