Officers were on a routine call when they found the man allegedly under the influence of a controlled substance in a parked car at 11:22 p.m., near 37th Avenue and Fulton Street. As officers approached him, the man ran from the cops, who chased him for eight blocks before tackling him to the ground, according to police.
The cops say the man suffered some minor bruises from the struggle. They called for an ambulance, but the man continued to resist authorities even as paramedics carried him away on a gurney.
When paramedics strapped him down, the man suddenly started having "medical problems." Paramedics performed CPR, and he was transported to UCSF Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Police say they have no clue what caused the man to go into cardiac arrest, but speculated that it could be that he was high on a controlled substance, plus the eight-block run that did him in.
We'll tell you more as soon as we know more about what happened.
