Police are asking for your help in locating the man responsible for shooting 24-year-old Lorenzo Jimenez who was shot to death earlier this summer.

On June 8, Jimenez, a local bouncer for the Roaring 20s Strip Club in North Beach, had been with several friends at the Double Dutch bar near 16th and

Guerrero streets, when he was confronted by as many as 10 Hispanic men, police said.

After leaving the

bar, the men viciously beat Jimenez in an unprovoked attack before one of them shot him. When police arrived, they found Jimenez lying in the roadway. He died the next day.

Virgil Hunter Is the Man to Get Amir Khan Back on Track

That's Hunter in the red shirt and black hat after star pupil Andre Ward's big win last month. - ALBERT SAMAHA

  • That's Hunter in the red shirt and black hat after star pupil Andre Ward's big win last month.
Because comparisons are an inescapable trait of sports fandom, Amir Khan was supposed to be the next Manny Pacquiao. This was around a year ago. He was fearless, willing to take two blows to give three. He could attack with speed and punch with power. His fights were consistently thrilling. Even his shortcomings seemed reminiscent of a younger, rawer Pac Man: He relied on one hand too much; he could be unnecessarily reckless; his footwork was sloppy; he put little energy into defense.

So the legendary Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's longtime trainer, was clearly the perfect person to school Khan, to sharpen his game the same way he had honed Pacquiao from exciting brawler to pound-for-pound king.

But over the last 11 months, the 25-year-old light welterweight lost two fights, looking especially bad in a July knockout by Danny Garcia. He and Roach split.

On Saturday, Khan (26-3) announced that he was hiring the Bay Area's own Virgil Hunter -- trainer of Andre Ward and Karim Mayfield -- to right the ship.

A San Francisco man accused of exposing himself to a woman while riding BART was acquitted of all charges after a jury concluded that there was no real evidence he was masturbating en route to San Francisco.

The jury deliberated for less than an hour on Tuesday afternoon before deciding Carlos Law, 39, was not guilty of indecent exposure. Had he been convicted, he would have been force to register as a sex offender, according to his attorney, Deputy Public Defender JP Visaya.

Here's what happened:

Next week, the political circus is coming to town. The Board of Supervisors will vote on the fate of Sheriff-in-Limbo Ross Mirkarimi, who grabbed his wife's arm in a domestic violence incident.

You might think it would be odd, then, to introduce a resolution relating to Domestic Violence Awareness Month at yesterday's Board of Supervisors meeting. But you're not Supervisor Eric Mar (Unless you are. Hello, Eric).

Mar thought better of his move -- perhaps with aid from a calendar. He says he will now likely introduce his resolution on Oct. 16, the week after the Board's big Mirarimi vote.

A San Francisco jury deadlocked on whether a local man was responsible for strangling Nikolaus Crumbley and leaving his body at McLaren Park nearly three decades ago.

District Attorney George Gascón said that despite DNA evidence linking 48-year-old William Payne to the crime scene, the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.

"DNA evidence and independent corroborating testimony linked the defendant to the brutal rape and murder of Mr. Crumbley," Gascón said. "We are disappointed with the outcome and will be evaluating how to proceed with the case."

A 50-year-old man was hauled to jail earlier this week on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman he met at a Sunset District bar.

Officer Carlos Manfredi says the crime took place on Sept. 21 when the woman and her boyfriend were drinking at an unidentified bar. The couple started chatting with the suspect, Martin J. Vaneycke, and learned they had similar music tastes. According to police, the woman and her boyfriend invited Vaneycke back to their place to listen to music.

As they listened to jams, both the woman and her boyfriend passed out, police said.

John Dennis, Libertarian Republican, Makes Night of the Living Pelosi Film

Posted By on Wed, Oct 3, 2012 at 7:00 AM

John Dennis, the Republican vying for Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco House seat, grew up in a housing project in Jersey City, N.J. The son of a longshoreman and a city hall clerk, he remembers those days vividly: how the building deteriorated over the course of his childhood; the broken elevators; the torn-down fences; the unswept garbage; the overwhelming sense of desertion.

"Things just didn't work," he recalls.

And, from his perspective, the people in charge didn't seem to care.

"I realized that when the government owns something, it it has no incentive to make capital improvements," says Dennis, who moved to San Francisco in 1991.

Posted By on Wed, Oct 3, 2012 at 6:00 AM

Walk!
  • Walk!

Forcing an American kid to put the remote down and exercise is like telling a public nudist to put his penis away.

But study upon study assures us that we're all fat -- and we're packing on the pounds by the minute. So here's a novel idea for all you kids out there: Get off your lazy, indulged rump and walk to school today.

Some 8,500 San Francisco kids are purportedly participating in today's International Walk to School Day, which is just what it sounds. Kids will be walking (more like sauntering slowly) to class.
