That makeshift Occupy camp that had become a fixture in downtown San Francisco is no more. According to press reports, some 70 police officers raided the small camp late last night, arresting 20 or so protesters.
The drama started about 11:35 p.m., when police surrounded the campsite on Market Street outside the Federal Reserve Building.
Public works crews rolled in 10 trucks and swept the camp away. The whole site was cleared out by 2 a.m.
"From what I understand, what is mostly here is homeless people, and we just need the sidewalk to be clear again," Officer Albie Esparza told the Chron.
The campsite had started out as an arm of Occupy SF, but quickly evolved into a den for homeless folks. Over the last few weeks, police had been warning the denizens that it was time for them to pack up and move on.
Officers politely noted that the site had become mostly a big mess, with feces and urine in front of the Federal Reserve Building. Needless to say, it was time to dismantle the camp, Esparza said.
Word among the broken up camp is that protesters/homeless folks are going to get together to figure out what to occupy next.
