Police have ended the search for 26-year-old Jose Ernesto Magana, who fell into the water on Sunday while fishing with his brother-in-law in Napa County.

Magana, a San Francisco resident, was reportedly drinking with Cesar Rivera Moreno, 31, of San Rafael, at about 2:45 a.m. when he fell into the water, according to press reports.

Both men had been drinking, and police believe that alcohol might have played a role int he accident.

Moreno, who doesn't know how to swim, called 911 for help; police arrived and scoured the waters, looking for Magana. Neighbors interviewed told police they heard a man yelling and screaming in Spanish after hearing a loud splash.

Police say Magana was not a strong swimmer, and possibly drowned; they found only a pair of his tennis shoes near the scene.

The Sheriff's Department suspended the search at 4 p.m. on Sunday, and decided putting a diver in the river would be too dangerous, considering they had no clue where Magana might be.

"We've exhausted all resources that we can do above the water," Napa County Sheriff's spokeswoman Capt. Tracey Stuart said.
