Mayor Ed Lee is getting all New York on us
It didn't take long for San Franciscans to organize against Mayor Ed Lee's loose plan to let cops stop and frisk whomever they please as a way to reduce the city's never-ending gun violence.
This Facebook page was created yesterday, which asks the mayor to put an end to his New York-style plan before it even begins. Here's what San Franciscans Against Stop and Frisk Policy say:
"We strongly OPPOSE SF Mayor Ed Lee's proposed 'Stop & Frisk' policy. Other strategies exist to reduce violent crime without infringing on civil rights. We feel this proposed policy will increase racial profiling and disproportionately affect people of color."
And if he does let cops stop and frisk at their own pleasure, this Facebook group will happily unleash the ACLU on him.
Let the lawsuits begin.
Community organizer
Gary Virginia created the Facebook group, which has 100 "likes" and counting. Here's what some of those users have to say about Mayor Lee's idea:
The
Chron reported the news yesterday after Mayor Lee told editors there he would implement the stop-and-frisk policy if that's what it took to get illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of violent criminals.
However, a New York Civil Liberties Union released an analysis
of New York's stop-and-frisk policy, which indicated that more young black men
were stopped and frisked by police last year than actually live in the
city. Blacks and Hispanics made up 87 percent of those stopped, while
whites made up only 9 percent.
As the Chron notes, even S.F. Police Chief Greg Suhr is not so sure about this plan, saying that he's "confident that once the
mayor hears the downside of this and how it was not well received in New
York or Philadelphia or by law enforcement in general, he'll see that's
not the best way to do business here."
