Michael Breyer, the Assembly candidate who will duel Phil Ting to represent the segment of San Francisco where people have lawns -- and mow them -- made an announcement today.
The candidate let it be known that this morning's Supreme Court ruling upholding Obamacare was to his liking. In this, he was not unique; a cavalcade of local politicos sent out triumphal press statements regarding today's announcement. Breyer, however, was the only one who could have titled his release "My Dad Done Good. My Dad Done Real Good."
Sadly, the son of Justice Stephen Breyer didn't do this.
The five-paragraph release is instead titled "Breyer Applauds US Supreme Court for Upholding the Affordable Care Act." And you'd have to read to the end of it to learn that the candidate is "the great-grandson of a San Francisco Supervisor, grandson of the first lawyer for the San Francisco School Board and the
son of a Supreme Court Justice." Huh. Seems relevant.
While we're reviewing Michael Breyer's genealogy, we might as well note he's the nephew of Federal
Judge Charles Breyer. The candidate has not yet seen fit to offer campaign-related commentary on any of
Uncle Chuck's rulings, however.
SF Weekly has contacted Breyer's campaign to inquire if there are any positions taken by his father, liberal lion
Justice Stephen Breyer, with which he'd differ.
Update, 5:59 p.m.: Michael Breyer notes that "I haven't read all 1,500 cases [Stephen Breyer] has been involved with. I'm sure there are some" he wouldn't agree with. But Justice Breyer "is a reasonable guy," continues his son. "On major cases -- Bush v. Gore, guns in schools, Citizens United, I tend to agree." He disagrees with his father, however, on the subject of cameras in the courtroom. While the Supreme Court Justice feels there are arguments to be made for or against them, Michael Breyer is adamantly for them.
