The San Francisco Medical Examiner declared today that 71-yer-old Sutchi Hui died from blunt force trauma to his head after being hit by a cyclist speeding through the Castro District last month.

Hui was walking across the street at Market and Castro when Chris Bucchere sped through the intersection on his bike, hitting Hui. Initially, Hui was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition, but his condition worsened, and four days later he died.

The Medical Examiner's Office told media outlets today that Hui had developed pneumonia

while at the hospital, and experienced breathing problems in the final days before he died.

The District Attorney's Office has said they believe there's plenty of evidence to file felony vehicular manslaughter charges against 35-year-old Bucchere. However, they are waiting for police to formally present their case to the DA.

A kitchen fire interrupted lunch for more than 150 patrons dining at Kokkari restaurant in the city's Financial District this afternoon.

The fire started at the upscale Greek restaurant around 1:30 p.m. However, nobody inside the restaurant even noticed until the fire trucks arrived. Folks passing by the restaurant, located at 200 Jackson St., saw smoke billowing out of the building, so they dialed 911.

SF Weekly Staff Writer Laura Murray is at the scene and talked to a chef who said the kitchen staff hadn't noticed anything burning where they were cooking.

Ross Mirkarimi Hearing: Eliana Lopez Video Allowed, Judge Rules

The now-infamous Eliana Lopez video may be used as evidence in suspended-Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi's ethics hearing, Judge Garrett Wong ruled.

The video, in which Lopez tearfully showed a bruise she said her husband gave her, could also eventually become public, as Wong did not tie any restrictions to the tape. The judge ordered for the tape to be released to Mayor Ed Lee and his legal team.

The ruling is perhaps Lee's most significant victory yet on his path to remove Mirkarimi from office. Lopez has defended her husband in the months since the Dec. 31 domestic dispute, so the footage will likely be the hearing's only instance where the victim speaks out against Mirkarimi, who pleaded guilty to false imprisonment.

Really Mean Man Seen Throwing Chihuahua From Motel Window

A Livermore man is sitting behind bars today after he was spotted this morning hurling a chihuahua from a motel balcony and then pointing a gun at a guest who confronted him about the animal cruelty.

A guest at Motel 6 on Lassen Road saw 39-year-old Michael Hamby toss the dog from a second-floor balcony, Sgt. John Hurd told media outlets.

The dog landed paws-first on the ground.

After seeing this act of cruelty, the motel guest picked a fight with Hamby over why he had thrown the dog, Hurd said. The fight became heated and a motel clerk intervened, telling the two guests to go to their own rooms. Shortly after, the guest got a knock on his door, and when he opened it, "Hamby was standing at the door and pointed a gun at him," Hurd said.

Coit Tower Prop. B Challenges Voters to Think for Themselves

Posted By on Wed, May 16, 2012 at 10:59 AM

To protect -- or serve?
  • To protect -- or serve?

When pondering how to vote on the Coit Tower Proposition B on the June 5 ballot, voters may be reminded of the joke about the indecisive rabbi. Well, this voter is.

In that joke, two men with a dispute come to the rabbi for adjudication. The first man states his case. "You're right," says the rabbi. The second man makes his rebuttal. "You're right," says the rabbi. The rabbi's wife breaks in: "They can't both be right!" The rabbi ponders this. "You're right, too."

Prop. B is a one-paragraph "declaration of policy" which, if passed, would "prioritize" the funds generated by Coit Tower for the landmark's upkeep and would "strictly limit commercial activities and private events" at the site. Opponents of the measure -- both San Francisco papers and Recreation and Parks Department boss Phil Ginsburg, namely -- have characterized this as NIMBY ballot-box politics which could deprive other city facilities from Rec and Park funds.

Proponents, meanwhile, accuse the city and Rec and Park of allowing Coit Tower to rot while using it as the city's champagne room to generate funds for the city or its favored nonprofits.

Well, you're right! You're right, too!

Marin Kids Force Crayola to Make Its Mark on the Environment

Sun Valley School's favorite color is green

The kids over at Sun Valley School in San Rafael are lamenting the fact that the Crayola markers they use to draw, write, and color, are pretty ... pretty polluting.

And because the students are sick of seeing so much wasted plastic, they started a petition on Change.org asking the company to give consumers a convenient way to recycle the millions of Crayola markers manufactured every year. As the kids astutely note, currently there's no method to recycle the nearly half a billion markers made every year, which is they they are explicitly asking Crayola to create a "take-back" program, giving consumers a safe way to recycle markers.

Here's what the students had to say to Crayola executives:

We are looking for your leadership to empower kids to be "green." Will

you take the lead and show the world that you care about keeping plastics out of landfills, incinerators and oceans? When plastics are sent to landfill, or burned for electricity, or washed into oceans, they pollute Earth.

Warm Weather Inspires Public Masturbation

Just another night in the Bay Area
  • Just another night in the Bay Area

The Examiner brings us this not-so-pleasurable story this morning about a disturbing uptick in public masturbation -- and we're not referring to your Muni ride last night.

Just last week in Half Moon Bay, sheriff's deputies were called to a

report of a man who allegedly had been pleasuring himself while peering

into a bedroom window of home on Amesport Landing at about 5:30 a.m. According to the Ex, the homeowner chased after the masturbating man, but lost sight of him. San Mateo County deputies later spotted the suspect and arrested him after another

chase.

Gilberto Flores, 33, was booked on charges of indecent exposure, peeping, and resisting arrest, deputies said.

But wait, there's more!
