Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi isn't the only local law enforcer being charged with domestic violence. District Attorney George Gascón announced today that he is bringing charges against Richard Soares, a San Francisco police officer, for allegedly assaulting a woman at a party while he was off-duty.
On Jan. 7, 2012, Soares and the woman he was dating, attended a birthday party at Slide nightclub. At some point, Soares allegedly pushed his date, causing her to hit her head and sustain a 1-inch laceration, according to the DA.
"Domestic violence cuts across all segments of society and is a crime that my office takes very seriously," Gascón said. "Regardless of who is involved, we will prosecute these cases when there is sufficient evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt."
Soares is being charged with one felony count of assault with force and one count of battery on a person with whom the defendant has a dating relationship, which is a misdemeanor.
If convicted, Soares could face up to four years in prison.
