Just when you think that things couldn't get more grim at AT&T Park, news breaks that one of its payroll managers was ripping off money from the Giants. Media outlets are reporting that Robin O'Connor, 41, was arrested on suspicion of embezzling more than $1.5 million from team accounts.

The well-respected manager, who was responsible for processing payroll for the team, including the players, is accused of redirecting payroll money into her personal account between June 2010 and June 2011.

"We discovered some possible misconduct, which resulted in her

dismissal," Staci Slaughter, the Giants' senior vice president of

communications, told the Chron. "We immediately contacted the U.S.

attorney's office and turned the situation over to them."

The incident came to the attention of the Giants last month when team officials confronted O'Connor after a home-loan representative from Bank of America called human resources. Part of her loan file included a letter allegedly signed by the head of human resources, explaining O'Connor's extra compensation.

She then admitted to the team that she had redirected $608,562.09 into her own account, according to media outlets. She was fired that day.

It's a bizarre off-the-field blow for a team that's already reeling on the field, with multiple players out with injuries. However, team officials would not say which players were affected by the embezzlement.

And to think ... all that money could have gone toward buying a hitter.
