Where Do San Francisco's Firefighters Live?

Coeur D'Alene? Really?

Not long ago, SF Weekly played with a data application the Bay Citizen created regarding where the city's employees live. It turns out, a number of city workers -- including more than a few firefighters -- live in far-off realms such as Placer County, Los Angeles, or even San Diego.

Between then and now, San Bruno exploded. In a similar situation, how many San Francisco firefighters would be able to get here at the drop of a hat?

According to residency data from last year, the answer is: More than you'd think and less than you'd hope.

According to the fire department, more than a third -- 33.9 percent -- of its firefighters live in San Francisco. After that, 16.3 percent hang their hats in San Mateo; 9.9 percent live in Sonoma; 9.1 percent reside in Contra Costa; 9.1 percent call Marin home; 8.4 percent are in Alameda; 3.1 percent live in Solano; 0.9 percent live in Santa Clara; and only 0.8 percent enjoy the Napa life. All told 91.5 percent of San Francisco's 1,568 firefighters live in the Bay Area. And, should a bridge ever be disabled, 51.1 percent live in locales that won't be affected.

Of the 8.5 percent who live outside the Bay Area, there are some far-flung addresses. While firefighters must live within four hours of the city per their union contract, some of these employees may have been grandfathered in during the days of the concorde. Nine firefighters live in the gold country of Placer County and six others live in San Diego, Fresno, or Los Angeles.

But there's also more than two dozen living in Sacramento County; two in Pollock Pines (a town so remote one of its major thoroughfares is the Pony Express Trail); and seven who live out of state. These non-Californians reside in towns your humble narrator can't find on the map (Canyon Wake, Indian Trail, Post Falls (possibly Idaho), Stone Mountain) as well as Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, Las Vegas, and Portland. We're presuming that's not Portland, Maine.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
