When the ancient Polynesians invented surfing, they often used a paddle to help them navigate. Fast-forward a few millennia, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding, or SUP, finds itself trendy again. Part of its increasing popularity is that standing upright allows surfers to spot waves more easily and thus catch more of them, multiplying the fun factor. Paddling back to the wave becomes less of a strain as well. The ability to cruise along on flat inland water, surveying the sights, is another advantage. Finally, its a good core workout. If youre sold on the idea, schedule an intro SUP lesson, free with board and paddle rental, and you may find yourself riding the waves like a Polynesian king.More
Many of us remember coming home from our elementary schools with freshly glazed pinchpots, cups, or whatever else our young imaginations could conjure up. Saturday mornings at the Randall Museum can bring that memory back, or create a new one for the youngsters. Ceramics make great gifts — especially on Mothers' and Fathers' Day. Hop on board for the Randall's once-weekly class, and for $6 and two weeks to have your work fired and glazed, you'll have all the materials you need.More

Call us crazy, but we were beginning to think that the rationale for denying a documentary filmmaker access to a U.C. Regents meeting yesterday depended on the university spokesperson you spoke to.

Trouble brewing...
"Honey, if you don't want to have so many bad hot flashes, why don't you lose some weight?"
The preceding statement will get you killed. You will be murdered. Your wife will not be found guilty by any jury in the land; she will weep that you're dead -- only because you have denied her the satisfaction of killing you again.
But, a U.C. San Francisco study has shown, it's arguably an accurate statement.

Fight the power -- with pillows!
Kidding! We know that, no matter what Bill O'Reilly thinks, San Francisco isn't really run by communists. At least not exclusively.
Still, after the travails our fair city has been through with irresponsible flash mobs converging on Justin Herman Plaza for massive pillow fights, we were tickled by some news today out of Belarus (a country that really is run by communists, and nasty ones, at that).
There are no stats on how many of the tweets simply said, "Goooooaaaaalllll"!
But, during the last 15 minutes of Sunday's World Cup final, Twitterers set a new record -- a sustained 2,000 tweets per second, the San Francisco-based company has announced.

That's not maple syrup
Corporate Ethics International, a rabble-rousing San Francisco environmental nonprofit, on Thursday launched a campaign urging a boycott of Alberta in protest of the Canadian province's oil sands petroleum extraction project.

Look! A Growhouse! Let's bust 'em...
Finding a marijuana growhouse in the Sunset is like bumping into a celebrity on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard: It happens all the time, and they invariably stink of pot.
But a growhouse in Laurel Heights? It's just not done! And yet, police earlier this week hauled out hundreds of plants and truckloads of pot after a raid at 3306 California. That's in Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier's district. Yesterday, she fired off a letter to the Department of Building Inspection asking it take a more proactive role in seeking pot-growers illegally evading the meter and "jumping the box" to power their electric lighting systems. Sadly, this work is often done by people who stopped a few credits short of an electrical engineering degree, and leads to fires.
Bread, circuses, and free crap for all you whiners...
No longer able to ignore the mounting flack from the press for ignoring the cries of enraged geeks -- and the empowered geeks at Consumer Reports-- Apple CEO Steve Jobs today addressed the sea of complaints about the iPhone 4's spotty antenna reception. Mr. Jobs was ready for his close-up at his Cupertino headquarters in front of select journalists and live-bloggers at 10 a.m.
What came next was an admission unfathomable for Apple disciples: "We're not perfect."
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'.
Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
