The Week in Gay: Celebrate Milk Day By Giving Money to Do-Nothing Politicians

Everybody knows what today is, right? Harvey Milk Day Eve!! Get ready to have trouble falling asleep tonight and prepare for visions of trod-upon dog poop (Harvey's legislative legacy) to be dancing in your head.

Speaking of Milk and his legacy, I seem to recall that Prop. 6 (the infamous Briggs initiative that Milk helped defeat) was leading in the polls by 30 percent two months before the election. Just before the election those numbers had swung wildly in the other direction, but still the measure was on track to pass. As we know now it was a remarkable failure. Polling sure is whacked.

For instance, take Prop. 8 in 2008. I seem to recall that although the numbers were much closer, the initiative was trailing in polls. A Field Poll from July 18, 2008 showed that 51 percent opposed banning same-sex marriage and 42 percent were in favor. When the poll results were released, Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said, "Over 90 percent of propositions that start out behind get taken down." Somehow those numbers reversed themselves between July and November. Maybe it was the threat of gay zombie invasion promoted by the Yes on 8ers and maybe it also had something to do with an inept campaign managed by Equality California (EQCA).

EQCA has decided that a new day has dawned. In comments responding to my post on Wednesday and on Michael Petrelis' blog Marc Solomon and Geoff Kors from EQCA say that their army of soldiers has begun changing hearts and minds. Just look at the results they have compiled. Their polls don't lie ... well not this time they won't. Really!! Have faith and make the check out to EQCA, spelled E-Q-C-A.

Trust them. Give them money. In fact Rep. Nancy Pelosi is speaking at an event for EQCA tonight ($75 and up) at the LGBT Center to kick off Harvey Milk Day. She is powerful and mighty and no matter how many times she is elected by gays she still needs us to do more to get pro-gay legislation passed. The gays are a never-ending fountain of cash, love, support, and incredibly short memories.

Never mind that the Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA) is the can being kicked down the road ("late June early July") and this week's special is once again a promised -- depending on who you speak to -- repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT). If we give MORE money and love and support to Democrats like Pelosi their promises will transform into legislation and unicorns for everyone to ride!

There seems to be a growing impatience with that shell game because this week there were ENDA demonstrations outside of Pelosi's office in San Francisco, inside Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin's office in Chicago and on Capitol Hill in D.C. Not everyone is content to sit on their ass and let politicians take their time to act or come up with another false timeline - last year, they said ENDA would happen in 2009.

It could happen in 2010 - now make out your check to the Democratic Party and they'll do everything humanly possible to get ENDA passed ... by the end of 2011. They all want money (and they're really gonna need it in 2012, so save up).

Pay up, doc...
  • Pay up, doc...
Whore watch: Dr. George Rekers. Rekers is the right-wing Christian with mustache disease and a hunger for 20-yr old manboy ass. The good doctor was paid $120,000 to testify as an expert against the rights of gay couples to adopt children in Florida. The good news coming out this week is that the Democratic Party chair is demanding the State Attorney General pay the taxpayers back, and she wrote a nasty letter about it. I have the feeling that the Democratic Party in Florida is about as strong as Terri Schiavo was. It's the thought that counts.

The thoughts in Minnesota aren't good ones and they are going to get worse. Governor Tim Pawlenty - who wants to be the next President that everyone calls Hitler - vetoed a bill that would have given rights to the surviving partner of a dead gay. Charming. He said, "Marriage -- as defined as between a man and a woman -- should remain elevated in our society at a special level..." Would someone please tell him about Rep. Mark Souter, who has been F ing the A of a woman that is NOT his wife. Oops ... I forgot ... heteros should not be restricted by legislation when it comes to cornholing. Only the gays.

This week the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has started running ads in Minnesota warning that everyone in the state will get fucked in the ass if they don't vote against gay marriage.

I bet there are lots of sore asses in Portugal.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
