Don't get us wrong -- it's a cute story. But Dawn Prennert and Frank Cannata of the Middle Polk Neighborhood Association were surprised that both the Chronicle and Examiner wrote stories about their little contest. But, like we said, it is a cute story. And you could win some money, too.

Here's the deal: The neighborhood association has hit upon the city to install more ashtrays and other cigarette butt receptacles on Polk between California and Broadway. If subsequent litter surveys reveal a 25 percent or greater drop in the number of discarded butts, then more of these receptacles might be popping up throughout the city. How can you make money? By coming up with a clever catchphrase urging people not to litter and naming cigarette tubes illustrating this story. Get your entries in by Dec. 8.

Prennert rattled off a litany of butt-related puns -- someone else thought of it before us, pity that. But, in a statement that brought joy to my heart, she noted that the name for the cigarette butt tube could be "a bit racy." That's good, because this item -- as wide as a can of soda, 18 inches long and cylindrical -- should be christened a "John C. Holmes."

Here are some other possible handles for the ash tube:

  • Butt-catcher or just catcher
  • The Ash-hole
  • Cig flute
  • Tip stick
  • Ash crash
And the catchprase:

  • Put your butt where it belongs
  • Stop Flicking!
  • If you must be reprehensibly anti-social and smoke, at least do it with class...
  • Be less dumb: dispose of cigarettes properly
  • Throwing cigarettes on the street is one more avenue of pleasure that is no longer open to you
  • We're tired of picking your butt...

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
