The victim was a 24-year-old San Francisco woman walking southbound on Broderick who was struck by a 19-year-old male out-of-towner driving to work in his black Honda. The name of the victim has not yet been released by the Medical Examiner pending the notification of next-of-kin; police have declined to identify the driver.
Witnesses on the scene said a car stopped for some reason on the busy thoroughfare (Fell starts with the letter "f," like "freeway") and the 19-year-old passed that vehicle on the left. It was not an unlawful maneuver, but, in doing so, he fatally struck the pedestrian.
"It was a legal move, but drivers are required to proceed with due caution," noted Tomioka. Following the San Francisco Police Department's investigation of the incident, the case will be presented to the District Attorney for possible prosecution.
