Study: Asshole Parents Play Role in Fucking Up Gay Kids

Ahh, the perfect family: faceless in gender-appropriate clothing an floating on a two-dimensional, sunshine-yellow disc while championing its own preservation. But here's the thing: that little girl in the dress -- we'll call her Wanda -- may eventually realize she's more into meat flaps than pork swords. Then what?

Here's what. The faceless mommy and daddy worry their detached little heads off, then explain to Wanda that she's abnormal and kick her off the disc. On the street, Wanda winds up sucking more carpet than ever, sometimes for money to support her crack habit. Then she kills herself.

Did it have to happen this way? A new study says no. And in case you missed all 190 mundane news articles on the topic, here's a little recap. Between 2002 and 2005, San Francisco State researchers rounded up 224 gay 20-somethings from around San Francisco. They asked them if they were part of supportive families, or non-supportive (which will henceforth be referred to as "asshole") families, and it turned out that the gays with the asshole families were generally not doing as well.

More than two-thirds of those with asshole families had attempted suicide, compared to only 20 percent of the gays with supportive families. Twice as many gays with asshole families had done the dirty, unprotected-style, in the past six months. They were also more inclined to get fucked up on drugs and be depressed.

While the idea of assholes trampling on the emotional well-being of their kids is not exactly revolutionary, there is something here that could help little Wanda (if in fact her parents are the newspaper reading sort of assholes, which they probably aren't). The lead author of the study, social worker Caitlin Ryan, said that the findings suggest that if asshole parents can try not to be total assholes -- perhaps occasionally telling their gay kids that they love them and stuff -- then the kids may not turn out as fucked up.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
