Waaaaay too much People Power: 71 Candidates vie for 3 spots as San Francisco's Obama Delegates

Good Activists: Bad Videos

By Benjamin Wachs

They voted for Barack Obama so much that now they want the chance to do it again. The 8th congressional district only gets to send 3 Obama delegates to the Democratic National Convention, and 71 “Democratic Activists” are competing for it. By all reports, the numbers are equally skewed all around the state.

Damn it, why does the cool kid’s lunch table always have to be so small?

The prospect of such an unwieldy election (and the idea that maybe some of the candidates are really Clinton spoilers) caused the Obama campaign to bring out the knives, cutting over 900 candidates for California delegate from the ballot – a move it can legally engage in, but a sure-fire way to piss off about 900 of your voters. 51 were from SF.

Last night Obama reversed the decision, saying “oh come all ye faithful” and let the chips fall where they may.

"We are confident that delegates elected from this pool will reflect the senator's commitment to a diverse and unified delegation at the national convention," Campaign Manager David Plouffe said, according to the AP.

Diverse is right. One group of candidates – calling themselves the “Unity Slate” – is hoping that by connecting their various PC constituencies Wonder Twins style, they can break away from the obscenely large pack. Activists Clementine Clarke (African American woman), Myrna Melgar (Latina woman), and Paul Hogarth (White gay male) are hoping to sweep. But, leaving nothing to chance, they also have a Facebook page, and a very amateur YouTube video (watch it above). As of this moment, no other prospective Obama delegate hopefulls seem this organized - but Sunday is a long way off.

To vote for them … or any of the other 68 Democrats competing … you must be a registered Democrat and live in the 8th congressional district (sorry, Sunset, that’s everybody but you). The election will start at 2 p.m. at the SEIU Local 1031 (250 Rhode Island Avenue) on Sunday, and God knows when it will end. If every candidate gets to make a speech, the convention might come first.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
