Severe cases of staph, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), have been added to the list of diseases that must be reported to local health authorities, according to an announcement sent out by the California Department of Health. In case you're not sure what a severe case of staph constitutes, the announcement contained this handy definition: "MRSA causes boils, abscesses, and other soft tissue infections and is spread through direct contact with people or contact with MRSA contaminated surfaces or items." The new reporting requirements will help officials to get a better idea of how many people are contracting staph and how to prevent more infections. Until the CDHP issues a more thorough report, we can offer this piece of advise, don't have unprotected sex with an IV drug user on top of a patch of artificial turf.
