Always a hot topic here in San Francisco, homelessness is perceived by most Americans to be getting worse, according to a new poll. This despite HUD statistics showing a decline in chronic homelessness of 12 percent between 2005 and 206.
What's more, 85 percent of those polled think the cause is essentially their own damn fault: alcohol and drugs, which should send local homeless advocates into a tizzy. But according to the National Coalition for the Homeless, the majority of homelessness is a lot simpler than that: poverty and a lack of affordable housing, plain and simple.
