Boxing Bootcamp Day 6

Posted By on Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 9:22 AM

Ridiculous San Francisco Moment of the Week occurred early this morning during bootcamp, while working out on a dock near Giants Stadium. We were facing the Bay, doing jumping jacks in the early morning sun, counting out loud with each repetition, when a guy -- looked white, with long brown hair to his shoulders, in his mid-40s, wearing a brown corduroy sport jacket, jeans and cowboy boots -- emerged from underneath the dock carrying a brown leather suitcase.

Now, he didn't look especially clean (kinda like he'd been sleeping underneath a dock for a couple weeks), but he definitely wasn't wet. No one in the camp seemed to pay much attention to the guy, but he looked pretty freaked out -- like he hadn't expected to emerge from under the dock to find 53 people jumping up and down in unison. I was only surprised that he was wearing cowboy boots. I expected something a little more sea-leggy -- like barnacles maybe.

Aquatic real estate news aside, we had our first training day with Paul Wade. Paul, rather obviously, seems to have a similar workout philosophy as Simon Redmond (i.e. running and calisthenics = good), but Paul had us run a little farther than Simon usually does, and the results were predictable -- some people were able to keep up, able to sweat through the additional mileage; and some people were near tears, on the verge of vomiting, totally unable to keep up. Since I've done some running before, and have recently become comfortable with "The Revolution Run" (in which I run through the soundtrack to Purple Rain in its entirety, and then rejoice), I was able to appreciate what Paul must go through trying to aerobically unite a group of mismatched non-athletes. "How sad it must be to be unhealthy," I said to myself. And then, as if on cue, as soon as we returned to the gym, I tripped over myself and pulled my groin. How sad, indeed.

When I started the camp last Monday, I was 5'11" and 205 pounds. Weighed myself today, after the workout, and I'm around 188.

Boxing Bootcamp is a bit of fun orchestrated by 3rd Street Gym, SF Weekly's Matt Stroud, and Rob Quintiliani from the SF Bay Guardian; the fun involves Rob and Matt training for 6 weeks before pummeling each other publicly for everyone's amusement. Questions? Write to Matt Stroud.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
