I appreciate a good cross just as much as any other girl who spent her formative years sporting green-and-blue plaid jumpers in Catholic school. But the pair that somebody painted at the corner of 25th and Mission streets really aren't an addition to the tradition of murals in the Mission District.
It's not generally The Snitch's role to post information or news about the Iraq War (or anything involving the U.S. military, for that matter, unless it intimately involves someone or something in our backyard). But last night after work, relaxing with a beer and reading the soon-to-be-old June issue of Harper's, I came across a boxed-out feature in their "Readings" section that deserves attention. It's a synopsized report from Staff Sgt. Paul McCully, during a post-action interview for the Army Combatives School. The subscription link is here, but if you don't subscribe to Harper's (I don't either), you can see an extended version of the report here -- on "Some Random Firefighter's" MySpace page, under the headline "This is why you don't mess with Army."
To that end, this is why you don't mess with Army:
Yesterday, seven more people got shot in the Western Addition, the Spurs swept the Cavs and gay marriage survived in Massachusetts. Label me a dick, but all of that sorta falls behind Dave Chappelle’s low-key, intimate performance at the Punchline Comedy Club last night.
Last August, as Israel and Lebanon got busy lobbing missiles at each other, we published a cover story about the over-enthusiastic local activist Lee Kaplan, the self-appointed champion of Israel who infiltrates conferences held by pro-Palestinian activists. Kaplan has kept up the crusade -- for example, he recently sued UC Berkeley sophomore Yaman Salahi, who started the blog Lee Kaplan Watch to raise questions about Kaplan's writings and tactics. Kaplan sued in small claims court for defamation, and according to Salahi's latest blog post, Kaplan just won.
