Third Eye Blind Release New Video For "Everything Is Easy"

Posted By on Tue, Jun 16, 2015 at 4:48 PM

"Do you know what happened to the Bold Italic?" Stephan Jenkins, lead singer of Third Eye Blind, asks me before I'm able to get to the first question of our interview. "They closed, but I don't know why they closed."

We speak over the phone (about the Bold Italic, and various other things) while Jenkins is in Connecticut, on tour to promote Third Eye Blind's brilliant new album, Dopamine.

Video Premiere: Crashing Hotels' "Could Ever Be True"

Posted By on Fri, Jun 12, 2015 at 11:01 AM

  • Kristina Bakrevski

This is what San Francisco band Crashing Hotels dub their sound, and it's a classification that could easily place them in the same vein as an electro band like Cold Cave. But songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ao Anderson and drummer Tony Bednar's project's is a brighter one; a dance rock vibe that relishes in the extravagance of life and despair isn't an option. Their essence is captured in the subject of today's post, "Could Ever Be True."

Moment of Truth Video Premiere: Down 2 Earth's "Powers" (ft. Simmi)

Posted By on Wed, May 20, 2015 at 9:23 AM

Down 2 Earth's "Powers" (ft. Simmi), will be appearing as a bonus track on the group's upcoming re-issue of the popular Wildfire mixtape, but before that goes down, we're bringing you the video premiere right here on Moment of Truth, our weekly hip-hop column. The video is a dark complement to a fierce track that sees the HBK Gang affiliated crew, comprised of East Bay MC's Clyde Shankle, Dayvid Michael, and Azure (Iamsu!'s tour DJ), making a serious power play over the Kuya Beats production.

U2's The Edge Falls Off ... An Edge

Posted By on Fri, May 15, 2015 at 10:08 AM

David Howell Evans, a grown man who makes people refer to him as "The Edge," fell off the literal edge of a stage while meandering through a guitar solo last night in Vancouver. Evans plays guitar in U2 (that band whose songs miraculously appeared on your iPhone a little while back).

The best part of the video (embedded below) is the absolute confidence The Edge displays as he walks over the bright yellow strips clearly marking the edge of the stage. He must have been totally zoned out (or drunk) because the step before his fall his toes are already hanging off the stage and he doesn't even notice.

After The Edge takes a dive into the space between the stage and crowd with a thud (caused by his guitar and arm banging up against the edge of the stage), you can hear Bono in the background carrying along without The Edge. A+ video, 5/5 Bonos, would watch again.

The good news? Evans is reportedly alright and something interesting finally happened at a U2 concert. Maybe he'll take this as a wake up call to stop referring to himself like he's some rebellious character out of a poorly written novel?

(UPDATE: An earlier version of this story misidentified David Howell Evans. It has been corrected.)

U2's I&E tour comes to the SAP Center at San Jose May 18 and 19.

Watch: Fantastic Negrito's Tiny Desk Concert

Posted By on Wed, Mar 11, 2015 at 2:59 PM

This is pretty gratifying to see: Oakland's Fantastic Negrito, who beat out nearly 7,000 bands from around the country with his submission to NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Contest, has been enjoying the fruits of his labor — including some great press. As such, the singer, Xavier Dphrepaulezz, is heading into South by Southwest as one of the buzziest acts at the fest.

  • The Silhouette Era plays El Rio this Thursday, March 5.

There's a particular kind of surfy dream-pop that's emerged in the San Francisco indie scene over the past few years, and it's a genre that runs the gamut: There's sunny, aesthetically pleasing cruise-to-the-beach music; there's the cheeky, chunky, retro-garage variety.

Two-Fer Tuesday: New Music Videos From Goodnight, Texas and Opio x Free the Robots

  • Goodnight Texas / YouTube

In which we pair two new (ideally wildly different) music videos from local artists. Because everyone needs a little help getting through Tuesday.

Hey guys, it's Tuesday! Which means it's time for two of our favorite things: Alliterative headlines and music videos. This week's selections prove, among other things, that you don't need a gargantuan budget (nor live human beings on film) to make a damn cool music video.

In December 2014, for the first time, NPR announced it would open its Tiny Desk Concert series — featuring intimate performances by everyone from Cat Stevens to T-Pain — to up-and-coming, unsigned bands from all over the U.S. The Tiny Desk Concert Contest received nearly 7,000 submissions from all 50 states during the seven-week submission period. (California came out on top with 777 entries.)

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
