Stuck in Traffic with Those CDs Rappers on the Street Force Down Your Throat

Stuck is Traffic is a column in which I begrudgingly review, during my car ride to work, some of the unsolicited CDs SF Weekly receives from PR hacks (or in this case random people on the street).

Albums: Chaz's Welcome To My Awesome World and Bliss Emcee's Over Most Heads Vol. 1
Date: Friday, June 26.

I usually use this column to review music PR people shove down my throat, but this week I'm looking at a different kind of music pusher: CD bullies. You know them: they're the guys who hang around every major city in the U.S., handing CDs to tourists and then demanding money in exchange, using their friends as intimidation until the mark coughs up some dough. Yup, I'm going to review two of those CDs, which I was given on Market Street earlier this week.

Album:
Breaking Benjamin's Dark Before Dawn
Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Gusts of brisk morning air find their way through my jacket, forcing me to half-walk, half-run toward the refuge of my car. Once inside I inspect today's sonic breakfast: an unsolicited advance copy of Breaking Benjamin's Dark Before Dawn. If I had to guess by the cover, this is going to sound like Staind, but there's only one way to find out.

Album: Geoff Westen's I'm Not Crazy (click to listen)
Date: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

Out of all the unsolicited CD's I receive, this one in particular grabbed my attention due to its retro aesthetic. I mean let's face it — that font does not belong in 2015.

*key in the ignition*

Putting I'm Not Crazy into my car's CD player must have transformed my car (or at least its stereo system) into the DeLorean from Back to The Future, because by the time I pulled out of my driveway my speakers were putting out such strong '80s vibes that my driver and passenger-side doors may as well have opened gull-wing style.

Stuck in Traffic with The Stragglyrs

Album: The Stragglyrs' Rock Project
Date: Monday June 1, 2015

This is the best cover art I've seen in a while. To call your album Rock Project and then just throw a picture of a big mossy rock on the cover takes... well, rocks. It feels weirdly intimate, like I'm part of an inside joke with the band — and I love it.

As I pulled the baby-blue Rock Project CD out of its packaging and popped it into my car's CD player I hoped to find that same sense of intimacy with the group.

Oh, no. Oh no no no.

Stuck is Traffic is a column in which I begrudgingly review, during my car ride to work, some of the unsolicited CDs SF Weekly receives from PR hacks.

Album: Matt Jaffe & The Distractions’ Blast Off

Date: Friday, May 22, 2015

The morning's usual fog has reached a tipping point, becoming the kind of light mist that secretly gets your clothes wet on your walk to the car.

Matt Jaffe & The Distractions’ Blast Off sounds like the kind of record a friend's alt-looking sister would put on and passionately sing along to during a long car ride. You'd urge her to stop, but for some reason the nasally, nails-on-a-chalkboard delivery of lines like, “Put your finger in the socket / Put me in your pocket today” ring too true for her to contain herself. She loves it — no, she needs it.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
