Song of the Day: "Big Chang Chang" by Nef The Pharaoh

Posted By on Wed, Mar 2, 2016 at 10:19 AM

For reasons I still can't figure out, I woke up this morning with the lead single from Vallejo rapper Nef the Pharaoh's latest EP stuck in my head. "Big Chang Chang," as the song is called, is easily one of Nef's best songs, second only to his breakout hit, "Big Tymin'," that dropped at the end of 2015.

Nef (or "Neffy," as he calls himself) is only 20-years-old and is the latest protege to sign to E-40's Sick Wid It Records. Though he's hard at work on his debut album, My Great Impression, the MC found time to release an EP, Neffy Got Wings, at the beginning of this year.

"All The Beauty" is Lila Rose's Most Cathartic Song Yet

Posted By on Fri, Feb 12, 2016 at 12:01 PM

Lila Rose was born with a form of hyperacusis, a health condition characterized by an increased sensitivity to certain sound frequencies and volume ranges, which can make certain natural sounds unbearable and some music incredibly intense.

Despite this, the Toronto-born, Bay Area-based singer decided to pursue music and dropped her debut album, Heart Machine, in 2012. "All The Beauty," Rose's newest single, dropped on Feb. 5 and it's one of the her more personal songs.

It's whimsical and eclectic, with chiming bells and hypnotic drumming, and Rose's voice, which sounds uncannily similar to that of Joanna Newsom's or Kate Bush's, works well with the instrumentals. The song was written intermittently over the course of a "painful" year in Rose's life and is about "learning how to cope with the emotions which come with loss, letting go, and surrendering to the more difficult emotions life gives us."

You Gotta Check Out Blackalicious' Sports-Themed Redux of "Alphabet Aerobics"

Posted By on Fri, Dec 4, 2015 at 7:00 AM

Blackalicious' "Alphabet Aerobics" is one of those hip-hop tracks that transcend the genre. What began as one of the finest displays of lyrical fluency became a meme before people ever knew what a meme was. "Have you heard that rap song where the dude goes through the alphabet rapping words that start with each letter?" is what everyone would say. Even recently, the Harry Potter dude covered it admirably on Fallon. The track vaulted Blackalicious up from the underground and, 20 years later, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel are still making music.

Now, Blackalicious teamed up with Bleacher Report to drop a crazy, cool version of the classic track called "Sports Alphabet." It sticks with the theme of alphabetically-ordered alliterative rhymes, but now it's all sports-centric. The opening bars are: "Alley-alley-alley-alley-oop on amateurs/ Air above all and any actors is average," and it keeps going from there. A lot of the punctuating words riff on the original, so it sounds familiar to long-time fans.
