Posted By on Fri, Jul 15, 2011 at 2:47 PM

kittens_on_dj_decks.jpg

Felines have good ears, so perhaps it's no surprise that they make good (and freaking cute) DJs. Watch these three kitties play on the wheels of steel in this adorable video, and ponder the newly important dual meanings of the word "scratch". Or just go "awwwww."

  • Now just imagine a tall, skinny Lou Reed in there somewhere ...

Well, we certainly didn't see this coming: Bay Area metal giant Metallica and former Velvet Underground frontman/living god Lou Reed are about 90 percent done with a new album they've recorded together. Lou Reed and Metallica? Yes: Lou Reed and Metallica. We know. It's weird.

Video Proof That Children Love Nobunny -- Or at Least Squeezing His Nose

Posted By on Wed, Jun 15, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Nobunny. With children!
  • Nobunny. With children!

Awesome of the day, right here: Rabbit-faced Bay Area garage-rocker Nobunny -- a favorite of sweaty rock fans from 924 Gilman to Bottom of the Hill -- is on tour right now. While in Chicago, he appeared (for the second time!) on a children's musical show called Chic-A-Go-Go. (Basically,it's like Soul Train but with kids -- toddlers, babies, and even a few baby-looking adults.) Naturally, Justin Champlin's bunny mask was on -- and, uh, so were his dance skills. Dude rocks it in tight black pants with just a black leather jacket hiding his pasty beer gut. The kids get down to the Nobunny music playing (he doesn't actually perform). Then one brave little girl asks to squeeze his nose.

Whoa: How to Use Your Bike as a Musical Instrument

Posted By on Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 4:32 PM

Simpler than your average drum machine
  • Simpler than your average drum machine

Well nevermind how, exactly, but holy crap, did you know you can use your bike as a musical instrument? We did not. But that's just what sound designer, composer and apparently avid mountain biker Roger Lima did. Give the dude a Specialized FSR, a cardboard box, a microphone, a laptop, and a barbecue fork, and he can make a pretty spiffy little track. Check out the amazing video after the jump.

Yours Truly + tUnE-yArDs = Local Radness

Posted By on Wed, May 18, 2011 at 8:29 AM

tUnE-yArDs in Oakland
  • tUnE-yArDs in Oakland

The guys behind local video website Yours Truly have been on a roll lately -- that's partly why they got a special shout-out in our Best Of 2011 issue, out today -- and their latest video continues to roll pretty hard. Regular readers have doubtless noticed our enthusiasm for a hard-to-classify musical project outta Oakland called tUnE-yArDs, and today, Yours Truly released its own love letter to the group: A video with tUnE-yArDs' Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner at New and Improved Recording in Oakland -- the very studio where tUnE-yArDs' masterpiece of an album, w h o k i l l, was recorded. The video has Garbus explaining in detail the thought process behind the title of the new album, then shows her and Brenner performing live, building layer upon layer of "You Yes You" into the song's memorable groove. Check it out:

Wildly popular yet uncompromisingly traditional local party-brass band Brass Menazeri got into a jam with Boston's Mr. Lif. The result is so beautiful it changed our brains just to hear a little bit. Brain different now! Different and better.

Wonderful brain-changing video after the jump.

Okay, Kill Rock Stars, we really, really hope this isn't some kind of April fool's stunt. You're going to break a lot of Bay Area hearts if it is. What are we talking about? A new little note on the KRS website that says the first 200 people who preorder the new collaboration album from Thao Ngyuen and Mirah will get a personal phone call from the ladies thanking them for their purchase.

Watch an Amazing Video of Nirvana Playing at the Cow Palace and Destroying Shit from 1991

Posted By on Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 4:20 PM

Breaking shit since 1987
  • Breaking shit since 1987

This will remind you '90s-swiping teenyboppers of the high-as-fuck standards you have to live up to: A heretofore "rare" video of Nirvana playing the Cow Palace in Daly City (right next to S.F.) from 1991.

Shot from the side of the stage, the clip shows the band screaming out "Territorial Pissings" at the close of its set. But what's really shocking and awesome is what happens when the song ends.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
