This Week: Tragedy at The Bataclan

Posted By on Fri, Nov 20, 2015 at 1:09 PM

This time last week, coordinated terror attacks across the city devastated Paris. Of the 129 people senselessly murdered, 89 were at an Eagles of Death Metal concert at The Bataclan Theatre. As survivors and first responders share full details of the horror that unfolded inside the venue, the music world has spent the week publicly struggling to comprehend how and why this happened — and how to move forward now. Bands also paid tribute to friends they lost in the attack, like British merch guy Nick Alexander, as well as three Universal Records employees. In place of our usual end of week quotes blog, this week, we'll focus on the aftermath of the Paris attacks.

Peace. Love. Metal.

Sam Smith Grabs His Balls, Katy Perry Buys Hillary a Necklace, and Ed Sheeran Doesn't Have a Vagina

Posted By on Fri, Oct 30, 2015 at 10:20 AM

There are influential women all over the place this week, with Katy Perry hanging with Hillary Clinton and Madonna, Alanis Morissette inspiring an unlikely song cover, Dave Navarro's mom's story getting told in a documentary, and Lionel Richie making an important call to a special lady...

Here are the quotes of the week:

“My birthday gift to fellow Scorpio, Hillary, says it all.”
Katy Perry bought this necklace for Hillary Clinton before performing at a Clinton rally in Iowa:

This Week: Taylor Acts White, Zendaya Turns Orange, and Stefani Feels Blue

  • No, THIS shit is bananas...

So, what did we learn this week? We learned that Gwen Stefani can't fake cry to save her life, religion should never be brought into fundraising exercises (even if you do happen to have a giant Star of David lying around), Justin Bieber should be able to go outside naked, and there were occasions when Paris Hilton, Travis Barker, and Suge Knight all used to party together. No, really.

Here are the quotes of the week:

“I sell records in countries where gay men get killed and that’s a big thing for me, because maybe one person in that country will pick up my album, realize it’s by a gay artist, and it might change their opinion."
Massive high five, Sam Smith! (NME)

This Week: Travis Barker Confesses, TI Fucks Up, and Taylor Swift's Lady Obsession

Posted By on Fri, Oct 16, 2015 at 10:09 AM

How can we sum up this week? Let's just say it wasn't stellar for hip-hop artists talking about women, and that Lady Gaga and Travis Barker have very different ideas about waste receptacles. We'll let the quotes of the week do the rest of the talking...

“Not to be sexist, but I can’t vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman… Women make rash decisions emotionally… And I sure would hate to set off a nuke… I think you would be able to get the Loch Ness Monster elected before…”
TI proving that every sentence that has ever started with the phrase "Not to be sexist..." is always, always, always mind-blowingly sexist. (DJ Whoo Kid)

“Honey child, hush your mouth. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
If Oprah Winfrey was ever a TI fan, it’s safe to say she isn’t now. (TMZ)

Holy shit! It's an end-of-week quotes blog featuring both Jesus and Kanye, yet the two things are not related for once! What is the world coming to?! Don't worry. Egos are still running rampant this week regardless, with Justin Bieber trying to sound humble and doing the opposite, Azealia Banks thinking she's better than (basically) the (entire) world and Kanye (still) thinking he's the best celebrity. Or something. Thank goodness we've got grandmas and Don Henley to keep everyone in check...

Here are the quotes of the week:

"I believe he is serious. And I know that he, you know, if he puts his mind to something, he'll do his best... I don't know if that was planned and I just didn't know about it, or if he came up with that idea right then and there... That was a fun night."

This Week: Gaga's Hoo-Ha, Britney's Toe, and Billy Joel's New Dancers

Posted By on Fri, Sep 4, 2015 at 10:56 AM

It's mostly about the ladies this week. There's Britney Spears who wants men to suck an unexpected body part of hers, and Jackie Fuchs who leapt to the defense of rape survivors everywhere after Chrissie Hynde said a bunch of ridiculous bullshit on the subject. Then there's Lady Gaga throwing herself into a brand new role with aplomb, while Azealia Banks just keeps on, keepin' on, doing what she's always done. Oh. And Justin Bieber talked about crying a bit, as well.

This Week: Tyler the Creator's in Hot Water, Miley's in Mid-Air and Tyga's in Bed With a Young 'Un

Posted By on Fri, Aug 28, 2015 at 9:26 AM

We apologize in advance for the fact that both videos featured in today's end-of-week blog are Miley Cyrus-based, but she made too many valuable points about nipple censorship in the first one, and the second one just serves to prove how much little MTV cares about Cyrus doing something controversial at this Sunday's VMAs (it's clearly exactly why she was hired to host). Controversy has not been so kind this week to Tyler The Creator, however, who's facing a ban on entering the U.K., or Dr. Dre who's finally taking some heat over his history of beating women. It's not all grim news though... One Direction might be breaking up! Woo-hoo!

Here are your quotes of the week:

  • Instagram / Tyler The Creator

Five minutes after the cancelation of his dates in Australia, the U.K. has denied Tyler The Creator a visa to perform there this week. (Twitter)

"Coming to the U.K. is a privilege, and we expect those who come here to respect our shared values. The Home Secretary has the power to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the U.K. is not conducive to the public good or if their exclusion is justified on public policy grounds."

This Week: NWA Are Muppets, Patti Smith Is an Aqua Teen, and Calvin Harris Is the Hulk

Posted By on Fri, Aug 21, 2015 at 9:50 AM

This week, the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton made bank at the box office and garnered rave reviews from critics. The unexpected knock-on effect of this has been a shocking combination of real-life reports of how NWA conducted themselves at the time and... some cartoon stuff. Seriously. Ice Cube took the opportunity to rep South Park, and then The Muppets got involved. Sound like total nonsense? It kind of does.

Here are your quotes (and clips) of the week:

This Week: Janelle Monae's Weapon, Ed Sheeran's Pasta, and the Androgyny of Miley Cyrus

Posted By on Fri, Aug 14, 2015 at 9:40 AM

Based on social media chatter and more formal interviews with the press, the theme of this week is undoubtedly bullying, and the best possible ways to deal with haters. Miley is defiant, Kendrick Lamar lives by example, Sam Smith publicly calls out homophobes, and Ed Sheeran's got pasta to eat, which is infinitely more important. Also, one Canadian NOFX fan refused to bow down to Fat Mike's on-stage bullying tactics a few days ago, and got $20 for his troubles.

Here are the quotes of the week:

  • Miley Cyrus / Instagram
“Lately, I've been talking a lot about my being gender-fluid and gender-neutral. And some people snarl at that. They want to judge me. People need more conventional role models, I guess. But I just don't care to be that person."
We don't want you to be that person either, Miley Cyrus. (Marie Claire

"You know what? You have no business being here. I will pay you $100 to leave this show. Are you gonna stand in front of me and bother me with your fuckin' tie-dye shirt and your beard?"
Fat Mike asked an audience member, deemed too "hipster" by bandmate El Hefe, to leave a NOFX show in Nova Scotia. The fan gave up his T-shirt to Mike, for $20 instead. (YouTube)

This Week: Grimes Kicks Ass, Morrissey Takes Names, and a Sad Farewell to Bobbi Kristina

Posted By on Fri, Jul 31, 2015 at 11:03 AM

This week, the world's getting turned upside down one quote at a time. We've got Billy Corgan trying to have fun, Azealia Banks not caring about her career (in Australia at least), and Skrillex becoming a life coach. As we said, NOTHING makes sense this week ... except for what The Pogues have been up to. And when The Pogues look like the normal ones in the room, you know something's gone wrong.

However, we have to start this week, with Lil B live-Tweeting his own brain imploding, as he wrestles with his own transphobia. This is the longest quote we've ever included in "This Week...", but we couldn't demonstrate the magnitude of his confusion without printing almost all of it. (As always, please note, grammar issues are his, not ours). Enjoy!

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
