Garth Brooks Is Throwing a Free Listening Party at The Independent This Evening

Posted By on Tue, Nov 11, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Garth Brooks wants to meet YOU at the Independent. Like, right now.
  • Garth Brooks wants to meet YOU at the Independent. Like, right now.

Attention Bay Area Garth Brooks mega-fans! You exist, right? Well dust off your boots and sidle on up to the Independent, where the country crooner just announced he will be holding a free listening party for his new record, Man Against Machine, at 5:30 this evening.

The album, Brooks's first in 14 years, dropped today, and the singer celebrated coming out of semi-retirement by (what else?) joining Twitter. Probably not incidentally, he also paid a visit to Twitter's headquarters in the city today, where he is — at this moment — being interviewed by Ellen DeGeneres in something they're calling a "Twitterview," which is a horrible way to refer to the practice of asking someone questions via Twitter. So far it has included such hard-hitting questions as "What is your favorite thing about Twitter so far?"

Huge Sculpture of Digital Underground's Humpty Hump Can Be Yours for Free

This would look smashing in your living room. - JOHNNYPAYPHONE.TUMBLR.COM

  • This would look smashing in your living room.

A man who calls himself Johnny Payphone is looking to bring a ginormous, functional sculpture shaped like Digital Underground frontman Humpty Hump into your home or storage facility for free. It's been abandoned in an Oakland storage facility for years, and oh, the stories it could tell.

This thing is insanely big. The nose opens up like two French doors. It's probably bigger than some studio apartments in the Mission, and apparently someone has tried living in it already. Tupac Shakur was still hanging out with Digital Underground when it was made, so he was probably all up in those nostrils, too.

They Are Now Literally Giving Away Tickets to See Van Halen This Sunday [Updated]

Posted By on Fri, Jun 1, 2012 at 10:57 AM

vh_deal.jpg

Update, 6/1/12, 3:45 p.m.: A Live Nation representative called us to say that the below offer was meant to go to out only a select group of folks with ties to Oracle, and was inadvertently sent out to an email list larger than intended (which is where we heard about it). The two-for-one Van Halen ticket deal is not a public offer, and was not related to the strength of sales of the show. According to Live Nation, both the Van Halen shows in the Bay Area are nearly sold out. Sorry!

Even before putting together this week's feature on the band, we'd gotten the feeling that maybe Van Halen's cock-swinging, getting-tired-early reunion tour wasn't quite the hot ticket some thought it might be.

And either we're right about that, or the band and its, promoter Live Nation, are feeling especially generous: This morning Oracle Arena announced a buy one, get one free deal for some tickets to this Sunday's Van Halen show.

Yes, you heard that right: Buy one ticket to what was supposed to be one of the year's biggest reunion shows, and they'll just give you another one.

Extra, Extra: Radiohead Newspaper Giveaway in S.F. Today

Posted By on Tue, Mar 29, 2011 at 8:30 AM

Le Sigh
  • Le Sigh

I'm obviously going to regret posting this when I show up at 2 p.m. and supplies are long gone, but so be it: today is the day us kicking screaming gucci little piggies get a free copy of The Universal Sigh, Radiohead's answer to the Panorama (or something).

The newspaper, which promises to contain all manner of artfully stilted sky-is-fallingisms, is a gesture to commemorate today's official hard-copy release of The King of Limbs. Ever the forward-thinkers, Radiohead will be monitoring the project's carbon footprint and retiring an equivalent number of credits. (Watch the cute lil' video about carbon retirement and imagine how much creepier it would be if set to, like, "Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors.")

Download a Tensnake Mini-Mix Before He Hits S.F.

Tensnake - SIMA KORENIVSKI

German DJ and producer Marco Niemerski (who makes disco-friendly house music under the name Tensnake) has been climbing the ladder of universal interest of late, thanks largely in part to a single by the name of "Coma Cat." The bubbling party tune--which borrows largely from a classic '80s dance jam à la Daft Punk--has been making the rounds in DJ sets worldwide, and boasts quite an alluring music video to boot.

Download A Free Mix in Honor of Laughing Squid's 15th Anniversary

Posted By on Tue, Oct 19, 2010 at 8:23 AM

Hey! Do you like cat videos and robot in-jokes and urban derring-do and painfully topical mashups and groaningly pop-culture-referential T-shirt designs and straight-up geek bliss? Don't front like you don't! Remember where you live?

Well, Scott Beale was way ahead of you fifteen years ago when he started Laughing Squid, almighty aggregator of the aforementioned, and he's still way ahead of you. (He has since moved from San Francisco to New York, so he's at least three hours ahead of you, but his presence can still be felt on certain Tenderloin corners, thanks to LS's sponsorship of Frank Chu, voted SF Weekly's Best Pathological Citizen of 2007.)

Meet Local Guitar God Joe Satriani in S.F. This Sunday

  • Satriani: Not the first to shave his head after balding set in.

Nowadays, with Guitar Hero turning everyday basement dwellers into rock gods, and electronica granting everyone with a laptop the ability to make impossible masterpieces, a skilled technician like Joe Satriani must feel left behind.

How could one of the Bay Area's most influential guitar heroes and teachers -- mentor of Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammet and famous wanker Steve Vai -- adapt to a listening public that probably couldn't care less about actual musicianship?

Announcement: Third Eye Blind to Play Free Show in S.F. This Week

  • Wonder what song they'll close the set with?
This would seem a perfect place to insert a "Semi-Charmed Life" joke, recall that Third Eye Blind hails from San Francisco, and/or begin a discussion about crystal meth references on American Top-40 radio.

But really, we just wanted to tell you that the band is playing a free show in its hometown this week.

Free Download: Listen to Jaswho? and His Alleged 'San Francisco Sound'

Jaswho? - MARTHA TRAER

Apparently, Bay Area-based multi-instrumentalist/producer/engineer/vocalist Jaswho? (pronounced Jase-hoo) has been crafting his club-friendly music for over a decade -- a style that is allegedly "at the forefront of the 'San Francisco Sound.'" I can't say I'm familiar with the "San Francsico Sound," really (I wasn't aware we had only one), but suffice it to say, there are apparently some infectious, pop-leaning dance tunes in the works for his upcoming debut album, Nudroid Musik (out on November 2 via Temple Music Group).

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
