Today would have been Tupac Shakur's 45th birthday. The East Harlem born rapper — who is widely-lauded as one of the greatest emcees of all time — was shot multiple times after leaving a boxing match with then-CEO of Death Row Records, Suge Knight in Las Vegas. He died six days later on September 13, 1996 at the age of 25.

Before Tupac went on to pursue his solo and very successful career — as of 2007, he'd sold over 75 million records worldwide — he was a member of Oakland's Digital Underground. Because of the rapper's involvement with the early Bay Area rap scene, and thanks to a Brooklynite named LeRoy McCarthy who promulgated the idea, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff made the official declaration yesterday that June 16 would be "Tupac Shakur Day" in honor of the West Coast legend.

Coinciding with this declaration is the release of the first trailer from the upcoming biopic on Tupac, All Eyez On Me, starring Demetrius Shipp Jr.
In fact, Tupac-related stories have been in the news quite a bit of late. His mother, Afeni Shakur, passed away on May 2 of this year at the age of 69 at her home in Sausalito. Later that month, the rapper's vintage Hummer H1, which he purchased three months before he was killed, was purchased by a devoted Tupac fan for $337,114. The souped-up vehicle had only 10,101 miles on it at the time of sale and was equipped with a 6.5-liter, turbo diesel V-8 engine with automatic transmission, as well as diamond-plate bumpers and an external PA system with three sirens.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
