Tickets for the 59th annual Monterey Jazz Festival, held in September at the oak tree-studded 20-acre Monterey County Fair and Event Center, go on sale today.  On eight stages throughout the tree day event (which occurs September 16 through 18), over a hundred artists will perform, including Kamasi Washington, Gregory Porter, Wayne Shorter Quartet, Pat Metheny, and The Bad Plus with Joshua Redman.

At the first festival, held on October 3, 1958, many of the biggest names in jazz — including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins — played at the event. Other notable acts of yore include the Count Basie and Coleman Hawkins Orchestras in 1959,  Miles Davis. Thelonious Monk, and Sly And The Family Stone in 1969, Duke Ellington throughout the 1960s, and Etta James in 1984. In recent years, The Roots, Snarky Puppy, and Robert Glasper have also played sets at the festival.

As one of the longest consecutively running jazz festivals in the country, the Monterey Jazz Festival also features educational activities, panel discussions, workshops, art exhibits, food vendors, and films.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
