Moment of Truth: The Hip-Hop Night the Bay Area Has Been Waiting For Is Here

Posted By on Wed, Jun 10, 2015 at 3:28 PM

When this column started back in January, our first story was an interview with Hieroglyphics' Pep Love. He talked about a plan to start a new hip-hop night in the Bay where the DJ was back at the forefront, putting the heads up on new bomb hip-hop that they could feel. "You know, I got my plan. It’s bubbling, but I don’t think people will believe it before they see it," he told me back then. And I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure if I 100 percent believed it was coming, but shouts out to Pep Love and Hiero crew, 'cause the Wax Poetic Hip-Hop Night is here and it starts on Friday, June 19, at Legionnaire Saloon in Downtown Oakland.

Wax Poetic brings the Bay back to the essence of hip-hop. DJ's spinnin', drinks flowing, and people gathering around the music and culture that we love. Both the upstairs and the downstairs of Legionnaire will be taken over for the party, which will be playing underground hip-hop with some funk breaks and afro beat sprinkled in. I can't emphasize enough: this is the event that the hip-hop community in the Bay sorely needs.

"Bring the fans back and bring back some of the creative people. The essential part that has been missing is the DJ familiarizing people with tracks. We're bringing that back the part of the culture. A straight up hip-hop night," Love says. "We wanna make people who love hip-hop the most feel like its theirs and deliver a diverse message."

That's what's up. Consider this a call to all hip-hop heads in the Bay to come out and show support every third Friday at Legionnaire for Wax Poetic. It's only $5 at the door and will feature DJ's Marc Stretch, Saurus, and Cutso for opening night.

Come out for real hip-hop, culture, and community.

Wax Poetic at Legionnaire Saloon, 2272 Telegraph Ave. Oakland. Tickets are $5.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
