Have you heard Oakland's four-piece multilingual indie-pop outfit Trails and Ways yet? Here... before we go any further, press play on this:

Feel me now? The group's ambitiously jam-packed debut album, Pathology, just dropped on Tuesday on Barsuk Records (Death Cab for Cutie, Cymbals Eat Guitars) and it's a journey through the words and sounds of the Bay, Brazil, Spain, and beyond. A Trails and Ways song is meant to evoke the best kind of wanderlust. Whether it's the high-pitched Caribbean riffs into punchy tribal drums of "Nunca" or the happy-go-lucky bass-line melody of "Mtn Tune," it's definitely one of the most promising indie projects in the Bay right now with "two guys, two girls and everybody sings."

Lucky for us, Trails and Ways is kicking off a U.S./Brazilian tour right here at home (where they should. Props!) tonight at the Independent. As an added bonus, All Shook Down favorite, Bells Atlas, is opening for them along with Perhapsy (who pleasantly reminds me of El Ten Eleven.) The Independent is positively my favorite place to go on a Friday night and this one's gonna be special (and only $13-$15!).

Now before leaving you with a parting T & W jam, can I just wax on what a solid album title Pathology is? It kills me how some bands come up with the most devoid garbage to name something that isn't meant to be glossed over. A good album title should circle around the essence of the music being presented and raise questions about the meaning of the songs on the album. With Pathology, it strikes me as though Trails and Ways is projecting their music as the search for a cure to a condition. What that condition is, is meant to make each different individual think. But I know that I can be in the shittiest mood and I bump "Nunca" (below) and all is is seemingly forgotten. [end existential rant] Happy Friday!

Trails and Ways w/ Bells Atlas & Perhapsy play The Independent tonight at 9 p.m. $13 presale, $15 door.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
