Via Noisey, here's your awesome music video clip of the day. Skrillex kicked off his week-long S.F. takeover at the Independent last night, and the show was attended by none other than world-famous comedian (and longtime fan of S.F.) Dave Chappelle. As the night peaked, Chappelle went crowd-surfing -- and made it all the way to the bar at the back of the room. Truly one "for the books," as Skrillex shouts in the above video. It's nearly five minutes long, but you can fast-forward to Dave's ride at about 3:20 -- or watch the whole thing for a taste of the gut-rattling set you probably missed. Skrillex has five more shows in the Bay Area this week, and they're all super sold-out. No word on whether Dave C. will be crowd-surfing at all of them.
A quick reminder: Tonight at the Chapel, a few people who may know something about the San Francisco music scene -- including yours truly -- will take part in a panel discussion on that very subject. "Nightlife & New Tech: The State of the SF Music Scene" will feature Patrick Brown of Different Fur Studios, Alexis Giles of Mox.TV, Julie Schuchard of Mezzanine and Tricycle Records, and me, your SF Weekly/All Shook Down music editor, all presented by a few city offices and concert app startup WillCall. WillCall founder Donnie Dinch will moderate.
Last week, we posted about a report on local real estate blog SocketSite pointing out that the owners of the building that houses the Elbo Room had put together a very preliminary plan to replace the bar and club with a residential structure. The plan is very tentative and has not been formally filed, but as the news spread, it was taken by some to mean that club's closure was imminent. As the owners of the Elbo Room clarified in a statement yesterday, this is not the case:
BottleRock Napa Valley wasn't the only major new Northern California festival to launch last year. In Monterey, the folks behind Coachella launched First City Festival, named in honor of its history as a city of firsts for California. The two-day event drew more than 20,000 people to catch an indie-focused lineup at the Monterey Fairgrounds that included Passion Pit, MGMT, Beach House, the Hold Steady, and Neko Case. Not every festival makes it around for a second time, but organizers have just announced that after a successful inaugural outing, First City will be returning in 2014.
