KMEL DJ Chuy Gomez Loses Job After 20 Years, Bay Area Rap Fans Pissed

After more than 20 years at influential local rap and R&B station KMEL, DJ and morning show host Jesus "Chuy" Gomez was fired yesterday -- and local fans are furious.

KTVU reports that KMEL's program director confirmed Thursday night that Gomez had been let go, but did not elaborate. Gomez's page has already been taken down from the station's website.

Gomez, who won an SF Weekly Best Of award in 2008, was an important voice local music. His support could elevate Bay Area rappers to a new level notoriety -- and conversely, a lack of it could plague an artist's credibility. As news of his firing spread Thursday, fans and important local artists reacted furiously on Twitter. Gomez himself seemed to share in the surprise of the decision: Gomez will reportedly be replaced at KMEL with DJ Sana G., who has been hosting the station's afternoon shows for three years. DJ Big Von will then move from evenings to afternoons. The reasons for Gomez's sudden dismissal are still unclear. -- @iPORT

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
