Every year seems to bring more entrants to the Northern California music festival scene. The latest is First City, a two-day festival this Aug. 24-25 at the Monterey fairgrounds that will bring out big, indie-leaning names like Modest Mouse, Passion Pit, MGMT, Beach House, Toro y Moi, and Neko Case for its inaugural year.

Presented by Goldenvoice -- the same outfit that puts on Coachella -- First City is meant to echo Monterey's claim of being the "first capital" of California: The coastal city was home to the state's first public library, public school, theatre, and newspaper. It also hosted the legendary 1967 Monterey Pop festival on the same grounds First City will return to this summer.

The lineup of 30-plus bands pretty obviously targets the Wayfarer-and-skinny-jean crowd, and will be spread across two days and three live music stages. Here it is alphabetically:

The Antlers

Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks

Beach House

The Black Angels

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
