The Odd Spectacle of Musicians Being in Other Musicians' Weddings

Posted By on Wed, Apr 10, 2013 at 8:53 AM

Everyone loves a good wedding -- the booze, the food, the outfits, the awkward drunk uncle dance. But truth is, nuptials are even more fascinating when famous musicians are involved. (What do their drunk uncles look like doing "The Birdie Song" dance?!) Here are five musicians and singers who have participated in the weddings of their fellow musician friends.

Blake Shelton for Kelly Clarkson

After last Sunday's ACM Awards, Kelly Clarkson told Entertainment Tonight that not only will Voice mentor and country-singin' wise-cracker Blake Shelton be performing at her wedding, he'll be officiating the entire thing. In our minds, he'll be sitting in front of the altar in a big, red, rotating chair, grinning, pointing to his own head and mouthing the words "Pick me" at the bride and groom. In reality, it will probably all just be charming and delightful. Sigh.

Jessica Simpson for Ashlee Simpson

Okay, okay, so they're family, so this one isn't crazy. But it should be noted that sibling rivalry -- especially between two famous sisters -- can be a major problem when it comes to big events. Therefore, it was rather nice, and a teeny bit touching, that Ashlee's Maid of Honor was her big sis, Jess, who was significantly more famous and successful than Ash at the time. Nice to see that family trumps fame-related nonsense sometimes.

Michael Jackson for Liza Minnelli

So, there's Michael Jackson, doing his duty as best man at Liza Minnelli's lavish wedding to David Gest in 2002: just another strange, surgically-altered face in a sea of strange, surgically-altered faces. And what thanks does he get? Right afterward, Minnelli flips out and blames him for the entire event even occurring. "I grabbed him when I saw him when I got out of there," Liza said in an interview after the marriage was all over, "And I said, 'Why did you let me marry this idiot?' [Michael] said, 'I thought you liked him!'" That's what happens when you put an entire room of crazy people together -- Michael Jackson starts looking like the sane one.

Rihanna for Katy Perry

It came as a surprise to absolutely nobody when the world found out that the chick with the squirting cake bras and short-shorts was BFFs with the mostly-naked S&M hussy. What was a surprise though, was how few penis-shaped items were involved when Ri-Ri threw Katy Perry's bachelorette party before Katy's marriage to Russell Brand. They went to Vegas alright, but spent most of the night at a Cirque de Soleil show before getting a few drinks in somewhere else. Not one penis cake? Seriously? It's like we just don't know you two at all.

Demi Lovato for Tiffany Thornton

So, you need to be a Disney Channel fan to give a shit about this one, but when Demi Lovato's old friend and Sonny With a Chance co-star Tiffany Thornton got married in 2011, Demi acted as a bridesmaid, caught the bouquet, and brought along Fez from That '70s Show as her date. We imagine Demi and Tiff spent the evening drinking champagne and singing saccharine pop songs at each other over slices of cake. Which, we also imagine, made everyone's hangovers infinitely worse the next day.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
